While BUTTERFLY itself isn't a hip-hop album, songs like "The Roof," "Honey," and "Babydoll" incorporate hip-hop elements and aren't like anything you would have heard on a Mariah album pre-BUTTERFLY. The media was right to at least mention that.
Josh - Just because "Butterfly" was done with Walter doesn't mean it doesn't have R&b influences. It's certainly more R&B than, say, "Hero" or "Forever."
And while the general sentiment is her ballads were better in the early 90s, most people would also say the ballads on BUTTERFLY (including "Butterfly," "My All," and "Close My Eyes") rank with her best. It was post-Walter that her ballads went downhill...until the new album.

"Honey" is one of her best songs without a doubt!

I agree. When I first heard the album, I was shocked at how quietly she sang the songs. I didn't even understand the lyrics of most of the songs the first couple times I heard them (eg "Honey," "The Roof," "Outside") but those three are all fantastic.
Anyway, "Forever" has a great vocal, but I find it to be a bit dull.

I just adore this song, it's definitely my favorite song on the album. I was heartbroken (albeit not surprised) when she said she doesn't like it. Much like with "Someday," her openly saying so killed my hopes of her performing this live again.

I'm just a bit puzzled considering she has a perfume named after this song.

I'm just a bit puzzled considering she has a perfume named after this song. This mixed-race appeal is as much a matter of brand positioning as genes, she says. The demo tape that was famously passed to Tommy Mottola when Carey was a teenage backing singer had plenty of urban influences, she says, but her former husband ("I can't even believe I was ever married, but, whatever") pushed the safe, mainstream pop songs.
"He said to me . . .we need more pop songs, we can't release your favourite song off the [1995] Daydream album, which of course was always the most R&B song, it's not acceptable to pop audiences, we're going to go with 'Forever'." This, she says dismissively, was "a pop record where I'm singing long notes and just belting out the whole time and I'm sure a lot of people enjoyed it but it's not my favourite song that I've ever written, you know what I mean?"www.mariahjournal.com/infozone/magazines/articles/2005/financialtimes_dec16/That said, when some country singer sang it on Idol in 2008 for 'Mariah Carey week', MC said she was glad that girl was singing "Forever" because a lot of people "don't know that song". So maybe these days she kinda appreciates the song... somewhat. #KeepHopeAlive

I didn't discover this until this past year, but I really enjoy it. It's one of the standouts from the rather overrated Daydream.

I love this, her vocals are so on point. So pretty. And THE BRIDGE. I was never fully on board with this as a single though, I was team "Underneath The Stars" and still am.

She came around to it and even posted so on Facebook. I almost cried for joy when I saw that. I can't remember whom, I think it was Liron, but that soundtrack song she wrote and sang, "Mesmerized," which we never got to hear was described as a retro 50's doo-wop ballad not unlike "Forever". I wish it would leak or something! :( Anyway, LOVE LOVE "Forever". Needs to be performed again in the future for sure.

It's a little bit too saccharine for my taste, but it's a decent song. My fave tracks from the Daydream album are Long Ago and Melt Away.

Vocal MASTERCLASS. Arguably her hardest vocal performance ever.

Vocal MASTERCLASS. Arguably her hardest vocal performance ever. Not that she was a great vocalist, but I remember when that woman did the song on American Idol she said it was the hardest song she'd had to sing. I laughed because 1) Of course it was but also because 2) She had sung a Martina McBride song and a Journey song and they're seen as one of the greatest vocalists ever in their genres and their songs had nothing on "Forever."

Billboard review from the 6/22/1996 issue:
The ever -hot "Daydream" continues to spawn sparkling hit singles -this time in the form of a sweet and swaying nugget. Within a retro -pop musical setting that is warmly reminiscent of her breakthrough hit, "Vision Of Love," Carey plays the romantic ingénue with convincing, wide -eyed innocence and infectious hope. This is a pleasant change of pace from the street rhythms of the recent No. 1 smash "Always Be My Baby" and a delightfully playful shift from the project's mournful and monumental "One Sweet Day." Expect pop and AC radio to have a programming field day with this lovely effort.

"Forever" had a great run on the AC chart (peak of #2 for 6 weeks, 30 total weeks on the chart) and should at least be remembered there.

This has been giving me all the feels in the world lately. What an unbelievably gorgeous melody she wrote and sang here. Like...the level of her gift is just...BEYOND. The bridge of this song, in particular, is stunning; the way her voice glides and holds the notes... "never be ashAAaAmed / cAaAall MY name / TELL ME! / I'm the one you treAasuuUuReee/"! I want nothing more than to hear her sing this again... just a little snippet, with Daniel Moore accompanying her on the piano... We got "Love Takes Time" after more than two decades, now it's "Forever's" turn.

I love "Forever" and its '60s kind of melody which I find irresistible. The live version on the UK cd single is the one I usually listen to. Such a sweet and tender moment from her "Daydream" album.
