The second single out of their 1986 album, "Fore!", the fourth in their career and the last one to really deliver the big numbers comercially. It got to #3 on the Hot 100. If there's one thing we all agree here is that this was a bar band at heart who just happened to make better produced albums than the average band of the genre. Also, they knew exactly who their audience was, hence a song with a title and a message like "Hip To Be Square". In the feel-good-kick-back-relax-pop-rock category, you don't get much better than this, really, and its success was even more understandable because this song totally captured the yuppie vibe of the time. Any more thoughts out there?

I like this song a helluva lot better than "Stuck With You", I was soooo excited to hear this song. Absolutely infectious. I did not really listen to the lyrics until a couple of years ago. Nevertheless the song reached #1 on the R&R charts in 1986. I absolutely wanted this to hit number one on Billboard as well, I thought for sure that it would.

My favorite song of theirs. Has a lot of energy to it and not nearly as overplayed as "Stuck With You" and especially "The Power Of Love".

I kind of like this. It is catchy and much better than Stuck With You.

This would definitely be one of my least favorite songs by Huey Lewis & The News and probably THE worst from his "Fore!" album. He should have released "Forest For The Trees" instead (though not right after "Stuck With You", as the song sounded a lot like it). "I Know What I Like" would have been a good choice as the second single, then "Jacob's Ladder" and then "Forest For The Trees", which, of course, is my favorite song from "Fore!" and one of my all-time faves by Lewis.

It was OK, but nothing special.

I don't agree with "I Know What I Like" as should've been second. That song was a little too simplistic, and could likely have ended the #1 parade early (as it is, it was the lowest-peaking of the five hits off Fore!). This might be his catchiest hit ever and is definitely one of my favorites.

I don't like this one as much as some of the group's other songs, but it's still pretty good to me.

This was the last "hip" song to hit #1, before "Hips Don't Lie."

One of my favorites from HL&TN! Mines too. I recently heard that Huey has lost most of his hearing. Poor guy.

34 years ago today, "Hip To Be Square" by Huey Lewis & The News reached its No.3 peak position on the Hot 100. It was the second single for their fourth album, "Fore!" following the 3-week No.1, "Stuck With You."

My least favorite from Huey Lewis and "Stuck With You" isn't far behind. My favorite song from him & the News is "The Power of Love" from the Back to the Future soundtrack.
