in my opinion, quite possibly the best song ever written and performed. it only reached #8, which is baffling to me. what an amazing, amazing song.
do you guys ever look at todays charts, and then look back and think... wow... we live in a very different time? i'm only 22. maybe the songwriting isn't as good nowadays or there's less emphasis on showmanship and actual musical skill. i mean i know there are a ton of really great songwriters and artists out there, but have there been any lately where you hear the song and have a reaction like the first time you hear an incredible song like "your song"?
i dunno. whenever i want something that really speaks to me i invariably end up looking in the backlogs of my collection to albums from decades ago.
anyway, i'm a dumb noob and this is probably something you read every day and scoff at. i just love that song so much.

I saw Elton in concert last year, and this was the song he closed with. It probably didn't chart higher than #8 because he was pretty much unknown at the time. I'd bet if it had been released 5 years later, it would have done better.
Regarding your other comments, it's all too true that we live in different times. I'd say that pretty much anything that was popular before the 1990's would never chart today, but it has nothing to do with the availability of good songwriters.
Today's CHR/Pop radio is geared towards people under 25, especially teenagers. Most teenagers are into rap, urban and teen music so that's all that charts anymore. I don't like it any more than you do, but so long as they get the ratings they want it's not going to change.

This is a really good song. It's such a classic despite it's simple lyrics.

I'm not fond of this one. I can appreciate that it's a classic and all, but it's way overplayed. My Elton faves are "Sacrifice" and "The One".

Great song. Not my favorite by Elton, but still excellent. I'd probably put the track among my top five Elton songs.

I think it's a little overrated among his catalogue, but it's still great.

Yeah, this is the one- his CLASSIC which will become a standard- along with a couple of others- but this one shines the brightest- great music and lyrics. This was his first US hit so it was the breakthough for him. Funny enough, he once had a dairy and in it, he had a entry which said- "didn't do much of anything today- wrote a song called "your song"- so even he didn't realize it was that good. When this came out, John Lennon was one of the first to praise it, before he even knew who Elton was, saying it was the first thing he had heard in a long time that seemed new and exciting and different.

Classic! One of many great songs he did, and I'd have to say this is his signature song.

I like it! One of the better songs of the early 70's.
