The 2nd single (I believe) from Nelly's debut album, Whoa, Nelly! ... I liked this so much better after hearing I'm Like A Bird forever on the radio. It helped that the song had a hella classy MTV video to go along with it - weird mud figures, cool dancing and lots of color. I heard it today after almost 2 years (no kidding) and its still so fresh and a great summer jam! Any thoughts?

Don't worry, people, I won't say one thing about this sounding like "What It's Like" by Everlast or "What I Am" by Edie Brickell & New Bohemians As for my opinion on this song - meh, kinda dull. I liked "I'm Like A Bird" better.

Loved it!
I believe it was on the first mix CD I ever made...I loved the full intro, it was sooo cool. Plus it reminded me of my super nintendo Donkey Kong games. The games that I still play, of course.

My favorite song of 2001!
I first heard this when it became her second video to hit the MuchMusic Countdown. That was in the Spring, I think (it was when ILAB was becoming huge in the States). It was flying upward and looked like it would be her second straight video to top the countdown, but once it hit #2 it suddenly turned and plunged downward. >:(
Then, one day in June, I decided to download it on Napster. It wasn't long before I really got into the song. I would later get her album Whoa, Nelly!. It's a really good album, one I would certainly recommend to any of you. :)
The original video is not the one most of you are familiar with - that one takes place mostly in a field on a sunny day or in some kind of hut. She has a guitar with her in the hut. It's pretty much back-and-forth between places throughout the whole song. So given that there really wasn't much to that video, I can understand why a new one was shot for the States.

As for "What I Am", this and that are so close that it's hard not to notice.

Wow, good to see I'm not the only one who likes this song. I'm trying to search for the Missy Elliot remix :( No luck... But, the more I hear this original, the more I like it. And I have to agree, there's quite a bit of a similarity with Everlast's song.

I thought there was only the Get Ur Freak On remix (that was on the Tomb Raider soundtrack, if I'm not mistaken) that featured Nelly Furtado...though I wouldn't be surprised if Missy did in fact return the favor.

I love this song...way better than ILAB, really chill. Z100 played it a few times in the Spring of 2001, and then dropped it for a few weeks, only to pump it again later in the summer.

The games that I still play, of course. Do you mean Donkey Kong Country? This song also reminded me of that game, especially in the Factory Level where the light keeps blinking on and off. There were a few other levels like that, too.

I love this as much as I loved ILAB. I didn't start off loving it instantaneously like I did with ILAB, but the video for this song really made me love the song more. The video was simple but very effective. It really resonated well with the song.

I'm trying to search for the Missy Elliot remix :( No luck... If you mean the Timbaland remix featuring Ms. Jade, I have it (I don't remember ever hearing a remix with Missy).

Oh yeah, I used to like this song...
Nothing like Nelly's new stuff though, but that song was fun.

My silly brain assumed that the Timbaland remix involved Missy too after I read about it on someone's blog and expected that it was a goodwill gesture for the Get Your Freak On remix...

I love this song but it was overplayed in Canada (of course). From her debut, I still prefer "I'm Like A Bird" and "Hey, Man" over this.

It's "Turn Off The Light"...right? Yep, you're correct. I looked up some of the misheard lyrics for this song at www.amiright.com , and rofl:

I liked this song. The urban mix with Timbaland and Ms. Jade got a lot of radio airplay here. But I really liked the Dataluxe version. For the mixshows, when they would play the dance mixes, that was the version they played.

It's "Turn Off The Light"...right? Thanks for the correction Moonshadow and mst3k. I was searching for the lyrics of this song and realised that there are soooo many songs with titles variating on turn/off/on/light - eg. by Enrique Iglesias, Laurayn Hill, Britney Spears, The Bee Gees..

This song helped set the ground for the whole "hip pop" thing everyone now is on about. Underrated.
I preferred Nelly then, but even her new stuff is decent.
