This does not sound like Vision of Love. Anyone who thinks so needs to have their ears cleaned.
It does sound like a less somber version of Breakdown though. I think Mariah herself drew comparisons between the two when this was first released.

Just the numerous rehashes shows the enormous influence that this song has.

Calling this song a little overrated is the biggest understatement I have ever heard. Possibly one of THE MOST overrated songs of all time. It's nothing that special and the overplay this song received was just disgusting. Uhh I'm pretty sure when Mariah made the song she was going for a simple classy feel. Not over produced and auto tuned. And no it wasn't over rated she deserved that sucess. Duh

And obviously it's a good enough song to still be talking about 4 years later :)

I remember loving this when I first heard it just because I was really into "the Notebook" at that time and I felt that this song captured the movie so well. A great song in it's own right however I feel like you really have to be in the mood to hear this. A great song though.
Best part for me:
And it's breaking my heart I'm trying to keep it together but I'm falling apart.
The pain reflected in this song It ain't even half of what I'm feeling inside.
The way her voice breaks in certain parts makes me love the song more.

Yes Mariah Carey's voice is amazing even when it breaks and cracks it's beautiful.

I remember the first time I heard this was when VH1 premiered it. I remember thinking to myself, "She just released her best single since Always Be My Baby." Regardless of whether or not it became a hit, I thought it was a great song. Luckily, millions of people thought so as well.
And some of those live performances where her voice cracks ... I preferred that to the performances when her voice didn't crack. Much more emotive. One of my favorites was Letterman. Another great one was the MTV Movie Awards.

As Mariah would say, it's in the history books. Don't get mad, get glad.

BTW, the second verse of this song reminds me of the second verse in Crybaby.

This is, along with Un-Break My Heart, one of these classic ballads that never get old for me. No matter how many times I've heard this track, it still sounds so fresh and amazing to me. I can't imagine myself ever getting tired of this one.

This is still fantastic a decade later. Granted, it hasn't hung around as strongly as I thought it would have, but that's not a knock to the quality of this at all.

Perfection, and it came just at the right time or her. Definitely one of her signature songs.

This song never gets old for me. The last chorus is pure gold, you can truly feel the anguish she felt.

A pop diva coming back from the ashes with pop gold . It was a earworm and simple and emotional. People felt the song and that is why it went so far. This is Mariahs last classic song and for that nostalgia . This song will hold a special place for me.
It's funny people complain this was overplayed but then again isn't a lot of trash overplayed? Atleast this was dope!

Honestly I never really cared for this but it's not a bad song by any means. It's definitely over rated though.

Still slays for me. As much as I love this, I still can't believe how massive it was. Just HUGE.
It's all about the second verse for me. So good.

It's alright, but nowhere near as good as "Vision of Love" and some others. I agree that it's a bit overrated. I much prefer her other ballads over this one, especially Vision of Love.

I agree, this song is really good, but I don't think it's anywhere near as good as her 90s signature hits.
Regardless, I was just ecstatic for her and the success it had.

I still like this a lot, but for something as massive as this was you don't see it mentioned much anymore. Still, it's a very good track and obviously a career highlight for her.

I have loved this song for years but I only bought it recently. It is such an incredible song, especially in the end when she starts singing louder and higher. Probably one of if not my favourite Mariah songs ever

I'm so glad to have lived through this song's reign. What an amazing commercial and critical resurgence.
Regarding the video, I wish she'd sustained this aesthetic for a longer period of time.

A little over-rated, but still, a decent credit on her resume. A "decent" credit? It was #1 for 14 weeks and was named the Hot 100 Song of the Decade. That's more than "decent." Meanwhile, it will pass 300 million VEVO/YouTube views before the end of the week: That's more than "Hollaback Girl," "Hung Up," "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," "Since U Been Gone," and "Gold Digger" from the same chart year.

What a flawless ballad, this was the song that brought Mariah Carey brought to stardom - I don't think she released anything this big since the Daydream era with "Fantasy"
The fact that she got another song of the decade with this song, the piano melody is beautiful, the hurt in her voice, and she looks gorgeous in the video!
