From 1981. This song is the theme song for my University's sports team, which are known as the Tigers!

it is indeed a good song, but unfortunately it is one of those monster hits that was so grossly overplayed that its appeal was severely compromised. you couldn't get away from this song in its day and i eventually grew to hate it. i suppose it would sound much better now since i haven't heard it in probably more than a decade.

Actually, this song is from the summer of 1982, not 1981 (I can tell, because we heard it several times on AT40 Fla... well, let's not go there...) Anyway, this song is in a tie for the fastest climber to number one on the R&R CHR chart. The other song is Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You", but due to the differences in chart sizes in 1982 and 1992, this comparison isn't very valid, especially because EOTT was right outside the Top 30 the week before it debuted at number 18. It jumped to four the next week and the week after that, dethroned "Rosanna" by Toto. The song did burn out rather fast, however, spending only thirteen weeks on the chart, which is an unusually short term for a song that topped the chart for five weeks. IWALY also spent a short time on the chart for as many weeks as she spent on top of the chart (7 weeks at #1, 14 weeks on the chart).

Cool song with that recognizable '80s sound! What an amazing intro.
Wasn't this on the soundtrack of one of the Rocky movies?

i believe it was the theme to all the movies... No, it was first used in "Rocky III". The first two in- stallments of the series used Bill Conti's "Gonna Fly Now". They did use EOTT in the beginning of "Rocky IV", if I'm not mistaken, but "Burning Heart" by Sur- vivor was considered the theme for that movie. I'm not sure about "V" because I didn't watch it, but the fact that the last (for now) installment came in around 1990 probably tells me that they didn't use EOTT for it--and when "VI" comes out, I seriously doubt that Survivor will reunite to perform a song for that soundtrack.

I like this alot more than when it was probably the most played song ever at one time, but the Survivor song I really dig is "I Can't Hold Back." Great song, great desperation sounding vocals, especially on lines like "I can feel you tremble when we touch... and something about the hands of fate." Really great one time ballad rocker, for those of you looking to expand your musical horizons.

"Vital Signs" was one of the first casettes I bought, probably when I was 8 or 9. I probably liked it then because the song was sung by the "Rocky group", but now I realize I could just recognize great tunes at a young age. I have since upgraded to CD.

Rocky V had more of a hip-hop type of soundtrack... the hit single from it (if you can call it a hit) was "Go For It! (Heart And Fire)" by Joey B. Ellis & Tynetta Hare (not sure if that was considered the theme song for the movie, though). As for "Eye Of The Tiger", it's one of my least favorite songs by Survivor (thanks to overplay, even to this day). "I Can't Hold Back" and "The Search Is Over" are my favorites by them.

I ask because it sure seems like this song and the infamous "OHH! OHH!" from Blur's "Song 2" seem to be the most played songs even now

I do remember that the lead singer for EOTT was different than for all of the other songs (with the exception of "American Heartbeat") performed by Survivor. I saw on Behind The Music where there was some sort of controversy between the band and their record label (Scotti Bros.). Does anyone remember this?

In jazz band my senior year of high school, during downtime, my buddy (who played guitar) would play this as a goof. Our other 2 friends and I would laugh and feign rocking out, often joining in on drums. (That's what the 3 of us played.)

Surprisingly, "Eye of the Tiger" was a minor hit on the AC chart. To this day, I can't figure out what made this song so appealing to AC listeners in 1982, when it was considered to be a little on the hard-rock side at the time. I'm wondering if maybe a less-intense, more acoustic version of the song was released to AC radio. Anybody know?
I agree that this was 1 of the most overplayed songs in the early '80s. But I liked Weird Al's parody ("Theme from Rocky XIII/Rye or the Kaiser") which came out about a year and a half later.

Great song despite being overplayed in sporting events and 80s/classic hits stations. My favorite Rocky-themed songs is "Gonna Fly Now", however.
