Hey, I've been getting into some of the older classic albums lately and picked up Elton John's Madman Across the Water. It has a couple of pages in the liner notes explaining the songs and the significance of the album in Elton's career. As I read about Tiny Dancer I was reminded of a story that had circulated about this song a lonnnnnng time ago. Urban legend had it that this song was about masturbation. Tiny Dancer in my hand. You get the drift. Had anybody else ever heard this story? The liner notes explicitly say that the song was written about Bernie Taupin's wife who was indeed a dancer.
Also, I noticed that the album has only 9 tracks. I would feel ripped off today to get an album with only 9 songs on it.

I like it, but it's not my favorite by him by any means.
...and the album only has 9 tracks because when it was originally pressed on vinyl, only 9 tracks could fit. Some CD reproduces of vinyl records include extra bonus tracks to fill out the CD more.

Even though there are only 9 songs, the time is over 40 minutes, which in 1971 or 1972 whenever this came out (71 I think) was quite a bit for an album. Elton was also pretty prolific in the early 1970s, with this album being one of many classics he put out between 71-75.
In addition to the albums he released, most of his singles during this period had non album b-sides.
NorthCoast, if you like Madman, and haven't already, you should check out some of Elton's better albums from this period, notably, Tumbleweed Connection, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, and Honkey Chateau. Captain Fantastic... too, tho that was a few years later and was right at his pinnacle of pop success. I think Captain... was first album to ever debut at #1 on album charts in America.

This is one of those songs like "Tempted" and "What I Like About You" - barely missing the Top 40 but now played on gold-based A/C stations all the time.

Yep, gonna check out Elton's other older stuff. Thanks for the info. It was so interesting to hear the non-singles from Madman. That voice is soooo familiar but the songs weren't. Kinda weird. Always wondered about the Elton/Bernie Taupin working relationship. Which came first, lyrics or melody? What if Elton didn't like the lyrics that Bernie wrote? Is it true Bernie wrote the lyrics to We Built this City by Jefferson Starship? I thought I just read that in Blender Mag. They picked it a as the worst song ever. LOL!

You're right, Tiny Dancer peaked at #41 on the Hot 100 in 1972 probaly due to the song's six minute plus length and became one of the most remeber tunes that peaked at the position up there with "La Grange", "Rock And Roll Never Forgets" and "Closer" among others.

Good song... definitely one of his many classics. Still, he's had some better songs.

Not really a fan of this one. Elton John tends to be hit and miss for me. This one's a miss.

There is a fantastic dance-cover version of this by Moto Blanco that came recently and has been making some waves.

This is a great song- that album is fantastic- "Indian Sunset" is one of my faves songs ever and "Levon" is in my TOP 3. Yeah, this was about Taupin's wife or girlfriend who was a dancer, he wrote it for her, the lyrics are all about her- I think she would sew blue jeans or something. This was when Taupin was writing good stuff instead of the shit he writes now.

An absolute classic but so overplayed/overexposed I rarely listen to it unless it happens to be playing somewhere.
