A discofied medley of '60s hits. Not bad, but kind of cheesy for today's standards.
It was significant because it hit #1 in the summer of '81, and it was the inspiration of many more medleys to follow, such as "Hooked on Classics", and "Swing the Mood".
There is also some debate about the title of the song. Sometimes the title is called "Stars on 45"; but other times it's referred to "Medley Intro Venus/Sugar Sugar/No Reply/I'll Be Back/Drive My Car/Do You Want to Know a Secret/We Can Work it Out/I Should Have Known Better/Nowhere Man/You're Going to Lose that Girl/Stars on 45" - which would make it the longest #1 song title in history.
I simply call it "Medley".

It's mostly a Beatles medley except for Shocking Blue's "Venus" and The Archies' "Sugar Sugar".

Stars on 45 a year later hit the Top 40 with another medley, this time a Stevie Wonder tribute.

Nice enough piece of fluff. Don't mind hearing it.

I never really liked it. Much better was the remix of the original records - in the exact same order - that preceeded this. It was popular in discoteques but was never released to radio. It was called Bits and Pieces.

The last Stars on 45 record was released in 1985-1986 but never was a hit in the USA called "The New Sam and Dave Medley" featuring a medley of Sam and Dave songs like "Soul Man" and "Hold On, I'm Comin'".

I spin this song quite a bit on my Ipod. I love this medley from these Dutch producers. #28 Hot 100 #44 BB Soul (now known as R&B/Hip Hop) 1982 Here is a great home made music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSmd9O-KA0c

Never made the R&R chart, but it was even heard in an April 2002 original AT40 Flashback show - The episode of the 3 hour starting with the second hour show was the first song of the April 1982 show that started the second hour.

It was helped to the top by the fact that people were still reeling from the murder of John Lennon and almost all things pertaining to the Beatles went through the roof after he died.

It was helped to the top by the fact that people were still reeling from the murder of John Lennon and almost all things pertaining to the Beatles went through the roof after he died. Yes, indeed! Around the time this song went to #1 on the Billboard chart, George Harrison's "All Those Years Ago", a tribute to Lennon, hit number one on the R&R chart. It broke the record (at the time) for the number of stations that added it the first week. As a result, it shot up the chart rapidly, wasting absolutely no time hitting #1. As for shocker's statement about the title of the song - it was always the full title, naming every single song, which made it the longest #1 song title in history on a technicality. If it had been called simply "Medley" (which is how R&R listed it), the longest song title would be BJ Thomas' "(Hey Won't You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song" (although, since that contains a subtitle, there's even debate about that). As for this song, even though it was a Top Five R&R song, I don't remember hearing this song. I probably thought it was just a Beatles song and didn't give it a second thought. It's pretty good, but, as shocker mentioned, kind of cheesy.

It's okay to hear from time to time, but nothing I'd want to hear too often. I generally prefer the individual songs from the medley.

"Sugar Sugar" and "Do You Want to Know a Secret" sounded much better when performed by the original artists. Nobody can top John Lennon or Paul McCartney. Many have tried to copy them, and many have followed them; but nobody can top them. They were legends, to say the least! :)

Anyone remember the #28 Stars on 45 medley "A Tribute to Stevie Wonder" in 1982?
