This was her first pop hit. I think it hit #15 in R&R and #16 in Billboard. I like it better than "A Public Affair."

I like it. Often, I listen to this and Green Day's (different) song of the same name back to back.

It's one of the GREAT univeral anthems. Not just about having agood time or taking a vacation, like some interpret it. With lines like:
"...all across the world, in every nation..." "It's time for the good times, forget about the bad times..." "...one day to come together, we can make things better..." "we can turn this workd around and bring back all of those happy days..." "...let love shine, and we will find a way to come together..."
It's completely frothy and escapist- but the underlying meaning makes it even more if an anthem. While it's always a performance highlight, the Girlie Show performance best expmplfies what the song's about.

I love it. Jessica Simpson's "Public Affair" reminded me of this.

This is my favorite song from Madonna. It gets me going and makes me wanna celebrate life. If I am not mistaken, this is her first song that charted.

This may not have the kind of substance some of her later material had, but it's still my favorite Madonna single. It has such a fun, effervescent quality. The song was originally given to R&B singer Phyllis Hyman who rejected the track, before it was brought to Madonna. Madonna's face didn't appear on the original single cover, and due to the R&B feel of the track and the fact it was getting play alongside all the other R&B club hits of the time, a lot of people thought the singer was black. "Holiday" went to #25 on the Hot Black Singles chart (the name of Billboard's R&B chart at the time). I seem to remember a very low-budget video for "Holiday" with Madonna dancing with two dancers in a field. I think it was a video for "Holiday" at least, although it may have been another early single. I can't find it on YouTube. Here's the demo.

But, jazzy, it DOES have substance (see my post from- gaps- five years ago)- you just have to get past the fun, frothy surface. :) Mary Wilson (of The Supremes) also turned it down- thankfully, as it gave Madonna one of her signature anthems.
There was a video filmed, but it's never been seen anywhere. There is a performance of the track that some think is the official video, but it's not.

Love the original version of this. Her debut album is early 80's crossover R&B/Dance gold.

My favorite Madonna song. Gets every party going. Many artists have tried to recreate the aura and sound of this track in the recent years, but they just can't pull it off the way she did.

This is one of my many favorite songs and singles by Madonna. It's such a happy, fun song. I like the freshened up mix that is on The Immaculate Collection more though I do like the original first version.

One of my favorite 80s Madonna songs. Often heard this as an 80s flashback on Lite FM 93.9, 100.3, B96, and on 103.5 short-lived Jammin Oldies format when I was younger.

40 years ago this week, "Holiday" debuted at #88 on the October 29, 1983 Billboard Hot 100. Somehow WBR/Madonna has bought the rights to this Solid Gold performance and it is the official video for Holiday: American Bandstand: I think is a French tv performance: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holiday_(Madonna_song)#6 UK #2 UK 1985 re-release #5 UK 1991 re-release #12 Cash Box #25 R&B
