In honor of Janet's birthday, I'm going waaaaaay back to Janet's first single from the Control album. This track was full of funky beats....and showed a much sassier side of Janet. This is a great song. The R&B remixes to this were great.
The video was pretty hot and choreographed by Paula Abdul. Paula can also be seen in the video.

This song was great, but it completely paled in comparison to her next few singles. Nonetheless, Janet finally hit her stride with this phenomenal Jam & Lewis production. It was actually the biggest R&B airplay hit she'd have until "That's The Way Love Goes." I've never heard any remixes for this one. I'd be surprised if they were hotter than the original!

I love that cover. I love the song. WHOOHHOOO! Janet had 9 or 10 number 1 r&b singles between Control and Rhythm Nation 1814. I always thought The Pleasure Principle was the biggest R&B airplay single Janet had off Control. Its the song I always hear about when people bring up Control.

I heard this on the radio just a couple of days ago. Pretty funky tune. I still enjoy listening to it.

I have some R&B mixes on vinyl that are HILARIOUS. Janet and another female ad lib throughout the track....completely dissing this guy they're singing about.

When I get back to Minnesota I'm going to create another countdown in honour of her birthday. This has always been one of my favourite records. The entire Controrl LP was off the hook! I thought 20 years ago after I had relocated to England I would not ever hear this record again! Thanks to Casey Kasem's AT40 I did!

This song was peaking at number eight (or R&R) twenty years ago today, if my memory serves me correctly. I was never a big fan of this song, however. My favorite song from the "Control" album was the ballad "Let's Wait Awhile", which hit the Top Five in early 1987.
Happy belated birthday, Janet!

If today were fifteen days ago or eight days ago, you'd be exactly right. I'd have to refresh my memory on her songs that I've heard to decide which is my favorite, but this is pretty good. So is her #1 from this album, "When I Think of You". I've never heard the other Control singles.

I love this song, but it drags on for a bit too long.

What Have You Done For Me Lately got to #4 on the Pop charts in 1986 and was on the charts the same time as Jermaine Jackson's "I Think IT's Love"

This is one of my favorite Janet songs, right up there with "Nasty Boys" and "Miss You Much". It might just be my favorite. Janet was it back in the day, and deservedly so. MJ was such a big star back then, so I've always admired how she was able to carve out her own place in pop history with classic jams and dance moves of her own.

I remember this- it was catchy but people didn't know it was just a "fluke" or not that it was a hit- after all, anything that had to do with Michael Jackson at the time was like GOLD- and the video was nothing special. It wasn't until "Nasty," the next one, that you knew it wasn't a fluke, she was a star.

A great way to break through into an impressive career. Good song, but I do prefer her later stuff.

Out of all her singles, 'WHYDFML' is the one I hear most often on the radio.

LOVE it. This and "The Pleasure Principle" go back and forth as my favourite from Janet. One of the best examples of eighties pop.
