As there have been quite a few threads on rock songs recently ,I thought this would also deserve its own thread . I can't really say what my favorite AIC song is as there are so many songs of theirs which I consider to be among the best songs in the history of music but this might be the one. Great instrumental performance , haunting lyrics and vocals and it sends shivers down my spine each time I listen to it. This peaked at #7 on the Mainstream Rock chart back in 93 and didn't make the Modern Rock chart at all . Rest In Peace Layne!

Yes, it's VERY dark... kind of funny, I mentioned this in the "dark songs" thread floating around somewhere on the board and now this thread gets bumped up.

I love it. AIC were such a great band, especially in this period of their career. Not many of AIC's songs did much on Modern Rock (perhaps too metal for some programmers at the time?), although keep in mind it was a 30-song chart and at least "Them Bones" and "Angry Chair" scraped. However, there were pretty big hits on there like "No Excuses" and "Heaven Beside You".

Jerry Cantrell wrote an incredible piece with this song. "Dirt" was a career defining album for AIC, no doubt about it.
Alice In Chains have become rather underrated. Whenever "grunge music" is brought up, Nirvana (why?), Pearl Jam, & Soundgarden come to mind. Alice In Chains are so mighty in the lyrical department and their grunge/metal fusion is just plain ol' cool. At least some haven't forgotten about them.

One of the many highlights from one of the best rock albums of the 90's. I still listen to Dirt a few times every year.

I still love me some AIC. I actually found myself humming I Stay Away earlier today. As for Dirt, their best album and one of the better albums I've across in my short life. Robert Christgau called it a "heroin album", which is true (moreso on Staley penned tracks), but the intensity and honesty is what makes this album.

This song hasn't aged one bit. I think that's the best compliment I can give to it. And well, it's not as if Alice In Chains are completely underrated, since their influence is all over most bands currently surfing the airwaves at Active Rock radio. It's just that that influence is reflected in the worst way possible. Most of those bands definitely took out the aggression and the constant sense of paranoia reflected on AIC's music, but turned it into generic, run-of-the-mill, frat-boy rock with one-dimensional lyrics and limited musical scope. Yes, Puddle Of Mudd, Three Days Grace et al: it's YOU I'm talking to!

I've really been into Alice in Chains lately, for some reason. This one is a favorite.

Ann Wilson performed a solid cover of this last year at the MoPOP Founders Awards. Alice in Chains were recipients and various artists sang their tunes.
