Of all the Janet. album tracks, this is the one I would have liked to see released as a single. UGH! It didn't stop it from peaking at #66 on R&B airplay, though.

So underrated!
The album itself has grown on me immensely in recent times.

That No. 66 R&B airplay peak probably was, like, 2-2.5m audience impressions.
Nonetheless, I love it. One of my favorites on janet.

A great song, and not even one of my favorites from the album. But that just shows how good the album is.
It did take me years to fully appreciate it, though. I used to always skip it when listening to the album, but I usually don't skip it anymore.
"Because of my gender, I've heard no too many times. Because of my race, I've heard no too many times." - That line is so simple, yet so effective.

Incredible. Probably the strongest lyrics on janet.
But with every no I grow in strength That is why African-American woman I stand tall with pride
You want to know what it takes To rid yourself of me now There's nothing you can do Accept me for who I am now

OMG this song is sooo underrated! You can really feel the message through her vocal delivery and the production is soo 90s jack swing/hip-hop in the best possible way, SO fun to choreograph to. One of my favorites on the album.

One of my faves from janet. Should've replaced "Because of Love" as a single.

Pretty sure it wouldn't have been a hit, but it's a good song.

Janet is performing it on the State of the World tour now for the first time since the tour for the album that originally featured this song.
LOVE it.

The lyrics to this are so timely! This is a stunning song and it gives me chills how relevant it still is and how ahead of the cure janet was.

Love this. Way more powerful lyrically than the topic-heavy songs on Rhythm Nation IMO. And unfortunately still so damn timely. That first verse about erasure of history, WOOF. And that second verse is a call to arms.

Loved seeing it in the SOTW Tour. As I was singing along to the more "obscure" tracks, the female that was next to me was impressed that I even knew every song.

Love this. In Grade 9 I had to do an essay where we got to pick 2 songs (from any decade) and use them to discuss a topic of our choice. My topic was racism and I chose this and MJ's "They Don't Care About Us" and got a fucking 'A' on the essay. Thank you Janet (and MJ)!

Definitely a highlight on this album. I did a presentation on Janet in my "Roots, Rap, and Reggae" class back in college and I included this song for its social lyrics.

This song is still relevant today. Janet was far beyond her years on this.
