I would've thought that a topic for this already existed, but the Search function showed otherwise.
This spent the first two weeks of 1983 at #2 on the R&R chart, blocked by Men at Work's "Down Under" (another great song). On the Hot 100, however, this managed to steal a week at #1 from them.
Despite the fact that this is on the Cool Rock compilation that I own, I'm just getting into this classic now. I must've not really payed attention to it until now...although sometime last week I heard it on WMJO and it sounded really good, so that might explain my taking a liking to it now.[/font]

I hear this about several times a week on the radio here. Good song. Toto didn't have very many hits, but it's among the best ones.

This was a favorite song of mine even before I become a chart fanatic (which happened a few months later!).
Toto's greatest hits CD is one of my favorites as well.

Top of the three Toto songs I really like...Africa, Hold The Line, and Rosanna.

I'm not a big fan of this. "Hold The Line" is probably the only Toto song I like.

I'm a huge Toto fan now, but I wasn't really a fan a couple of years ago. I was only really familiar with Africa, Rosanna, and Hold The Line. Africa was always my favorite. Now that I have heard all of Toto's songs, I still think Africa is my favorite.
This may be surprising, but Africa almost didn't make it on record. The band had worked on the song for a long time, but they weren't sure that they wanted to release it. Well, obviously, it's a good thing that they did. :)

Maybe their best song. Along with "I Won't Hold Back" and "Hold The Line"

Maybe their best song. Along with "I Won't Hold Back" and "Hold The Line" I Won't Hold You Back is a great one too. The guitar solo and the orchestration is really great. I don't think it gets much airplay anymore though. Even though it was one of Toto's biggest hits, they never made a video for it.

I love it. Didn't care for it much back then, though.

Please everyone, do yourself a favor and download the video for this. HI-larious. A friend of mine just had his birthday, and he's in love with this song, so he played it over and over on the jukebox. When I got home, I found a cover of it by Howie Day which is nice, but then I mentioned the song to another friend and he told me I had to see the video. He sent it to me, and it's wonderful 80's cheesiness. Plus it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Make sure to keep an eye out for the keyboard player's hair. The guy who sent it to me says: BEST VIDEO EVER! lol
Peace, Ben

I downloaded this video about 3 or so years ago...it's awesome in that 80s black woman librarian dancing on a book kind of way. However, I have yet to find any cheesy 80s vid that holds a candle to Journey's "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)."

However, I have yet to find any cheesy 80s vid that holds a candle to Journey's "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)." That is so true. The best thing MTV has ever done was it's "25 Lame" show, which was the 25 worst videos ever with Dennis Leary, Janeane Garofalo, Chris Katan and Jon Stewart commentating. They had such hilarious things to say about this video. I can't remember which number it is, even though I've watched it 70 times. I do remember them saying that it looked like they shot it at Home Depot and that one of the guys from the band looked like Ben Stiller. If you haven't seen it, try and find the video for Billy Squire-Take Me In Your Arms (I think that's the name of the song). Disturbing at best. hehe Peace, Ben

I love it. Didn't care for it much back then, though. Same here. I always changed the station when this song came on, but now I rather like it. Reminds me of my fifth grade year, one of my better years in grade school. This song has many "misheard lyrics". It took me awhile before I realized that they really weren't saying "There's nothing that a hundred men on Mars could ever do". And the line "I stopped an old man along the way" - I always thought it was "I stopped to know that along the way". The line that I REALLY had trouble with was "I know that I must do what's right, sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus among the Serengeti." I thought they were saying something like "...(it) sure is killing the Gerald Rysen by the leopards - a bunch that Sarah can eat."

Isn't the word "toto" Puerto Rican for...vagina or penis?
Lovely name...

Toto's guitarist Steve Lukather about their music videos:
"We were never a "video friendly" band. I hated doing them and we spent WAY too much time and money on them and out of the 25 or so we did, maybe 4-5 ever got shown. You see my point. Aside from one or 2 good ones our videos were horrible. Hard to watch for me. hahaha. The hair.. the clothes.. what were we thinking?? hahaha "

The first time I heard it, I thought it was Duran Duran.
Casey played it earlier this year as part of the theme "songs with places in their titles."

Africa, I'll Be Over You (sentimental favorite) and I Won't Hold You Back are my favorite Toto songs.
Question: Does anyone remember a couple of years ago, a British dance group? ??? sampled I Wont Hold You Back! And it was a huge dance smash back then. I can't, for the life of me, remember the song/group name.
And yes, Africa, is a big favorite of mine, and remember first hearing it in a travel ad for "Visit Africa" (cheesy, I know!)
