It was never a 45, by the time it was reluctantly put out on 12 in ch vinyl, 'Angel' was the bigger song.
So it never charted in Billboard

Madonna's label wanted to sell albums. Angel was from Like A Virgin. ITG from from the DSS soundtrack.
#1 in the UK for 4 weeks.

Madonna should definitely perform this at The Super Bowl.

ITG was a No. 1 sales hit on Variety's singles chart (which surveyed the top 25 markets) and also reached No. 3 on the ARC Weekly Top 40. It easily would have peaked in the top 3, with a strong chance at No. 1 had Billboard charted the 12-inch on the Hot 100.
As for the track itself, a timeless classic, one of her most acclaimed singles and the epitome of Madonna's dance-as-euphoria tracks. of course, there was the innuendo that made it appealing, as well. :)

^I never thought about the innuendo.

This is definitely one of her best. I couldn't believe this never got a proper A-side release, especially given that at that time it was not common to withold a single to sell albums. That didn't become common until the late 90's. Regardless, this still holds up to this day and get's me excited to go out and hit the town on Friday/Saturday nights!

A note about the commercial release- the 12-inch was issued when ITG was still climbing in airplay, so it really wasn't an afterthought to release it. It entered the variety sales chart at No. 3 for the chart dated June 5, 1985; "Groove" peaked on the 6/28/85 R&R chart. The ITG video, however, started getting airplay on MTV in April of that year- radio then picked up the track, despite what Sire was pushing. The label just opted to put the focus on the "Angel" 45- which didn't sell as well as the 12-inch for obvious reasons. areyouready, you never thought about lines such as "At night I lock the doors where no one else can see, I'm tired of dancing her all by myself, tonight I wanna dance with someone else"? :) Also, if you have a mind that wanders to such things, "groove" could mean something else, too. None of that takes away from the fact that it's a powerful and exhilarating track about dancing. The "Now-I-know-you're-mine' section is one of my favorite parts of the track.

Her best song, IMHO. It was absolutely everywhere in the summer of 85, or it seemed that way - it was only the #78 most played song of the year www.popradiotop20.com/POP/1985/1985-Yearly-Chart.htmbut it seemed a lot more ubiquitous because it was in the TV and radio ads for Desperately Seeking Susan, which were all over the place.

Jadore, as noted, it was released on a 12-inch single. Billboard charted it on the R&B chart- where it peaked at No. 19- but not on the Hot 100. It was a top 10 airplay hit, with little or no push from the record label, to my understanding.
I believe the No. 78 ranking comes from Radio & Records' year-end chart- not bad for a non-promoted track. :)

As mentioned on the 1st page, went to #6 on the Radio & Records' chart.
I love the video.

One of her best 80's songs. It's interesting that it never received a "full" single release in the U.S. I prefer the remixed version that appeared on the Immaculate Collection to the original.

B., but that version cuts the orgasmic "Now-I-know-you're-mine" section before the last choruses. :) I can do with the version on Immaculate Collection just fine, but I especially LOVE that part of ITG.

This just played on the radio here.
I've started to come around on this. Still not among my faves from Madge.

This is probably my favorite Madonna 80s track. If I had to pick the biggest Madonna recurrent in my area, this would definitely be it!

it pretty much defines the 80's sound, much like her singles from Like a Virgin.

I prefer the version from "Immaculate Collection" over the 1985 version.

I enjoy a nice portion of her discography, but no other song will compare to the memories of hearing this so much as a kid, the rides to & from school, the way it always made me feel when I sung along w/her. This will always be my favorite song from her.

This is so great. The pinnacle of the Boy-Toy era Madonna, the sheer joy just takes it to euphoric levels. It's also silently grown to a near-immortal status. I've heard this get dropped or quietly thrown in on many playlists in many different backgrounds and it has never ever failed.
In some ways, this is for her what "Wanna Be Startin Something" is for Michael Jackson, if not bigger. If there's one Madonna song that's always a hit with everyone or at any party, it's probably this.

Perfection. It's an enduring classic that is easily in my top 5 Madonna songs. It never fails to put me in a good mood.

I used to consider this rather overrated, until the other day when I bumped into this version of it that I hadn't heard of, which made me see the song in a totally different light. I love the synth solo and also the bridge... it's so hot and catchy!!
Hard to believe "Into The Groove" never even entered the Hot 100.
