Heard this today for probably the first time in at least a year.Β It was good to find that I enjoyed it after having grown sick of it during its chart run.Β Searching on 'lifehouse' I was surprised to see only a passing reference on this forum; I had expected that someone would have done a topic on it at some point.
The tune was huge on AR and Alt in the fall of 2000.Β It crossed over to CHR/Pop and Hot AC where it enjoyed a remarkably long chart run.Β It also made a splash at AAA.
The most unique feature of the song was the use of a bow in playing the bass.Β This is noticable from the first nanosecond of the intro right through the entire record.Β No bass had been played with a bow on a pop song in decades.Β The bass, in the rare instance where it was used, had almost always been plucked except in classical music.

I didn't know about the bow being used on the bass...thanks for the info. Yeah, I love this song...I really never got tired of it, in spite of it being heavily played on various stations (either alt, pop, hot AC) for well over a year. I still think it sounds amazing.
And about the search function, I think we've all come to the conclusion that it sucks and works only when it wants to. I've been lucky a few times, but that's about it.

This hit #3 on my chart in May 2001. I liked it a lot but it got severe overplay.

Absolutely FANTASTIC song. I never got sick of it and I still listen to it somewhat often today. It peaked at #1 on my personal chart for 1 week, but became the #2 song of 2001.

It was definitely overrated and EXTREMELY overplayed(extra emphasis on extrememly). In fact, I think it was precisely for that reason that I didn't start liking the song until 2 years after it's release.

I like this song, however, I think the song's success killed this band's chance at a long career. I read recently on another board that Lifehouse was recently dropped by their label and that the band for all intents and purposes have disbanded for the time being. Is this true? If so, I saw them live once and thought they had some potential for a young band. Radio just wouldn't give up on Hanging By A Moment and their subsequent singles didn't do too much.

Now that it's not played as often now as back in 2001, I can listen to it again without the burnout factor. It's too bad that radio stations seemed to want to hang on to HBAM when they had other good songs like "Sick Cycle Carousel" and "Spin".

I have to disagree with you, tico.Β I haven't heard anything else from Lifehouse that approaches the quality of HBAM.Β IMO, that's the main reason that the band has not had any subsequent success.Β It isn't so much that HBAM was overplayed (although it certainly was), it has more to do with the fact that Lifehouse hasn't done anything else nearly so unique.Β
I think Jason Wade may have a future ahead of him.Β Teamed with the right producers this guy could make some great music.Β He's a very talented singer and songwriter.Β Trouble is that the execution and production of Wade's songs falls short of potential.
I doubt anyone else in Lifehouse will ever do much more than session work, but that can be very profitable so I wouldn't pity any of them.
Of course, I could be wrong. I usually am when it comes to pop music.

My #1 song of 2001. Luckily, I only got burned out on this for a few months near the end of 2001/early 2002. I still hear it just enough to listen to it almost every time it comes on.
Didn't this spend something like 15 weeks on Gavin's AC chart?
I also agree with golden eagle boy's assessment of the song.

Unfortunately for me, I totally overplayed this song before it made the Top 10 on Pop therefore hearing the song constantly after I got sick of it initially for months and months thereafter. It was a Top 10 smash for me too but didn't last really long.

I can't remember this song. I just...don't know what in the world I was listening to at the time. Maybe this song was out while I was in my rap phase? ??? Anyways, I really like it. I especially love this lyric: I'm fallin' even more in love with you... It would sound good on Pop today.

It's too bad that radio stations seemed to want to hang on to HBAM when they had other good songs like "Sick Cycle Carousel" and "Spin". And "Breathing". In fact, I completely forgot about "Sick Cycle Carousel" until I went to their website.

Virtually ever CHR/Hot AC radio station had this track as their #1 track of the year for 2001. I agree wholeheartedly that the radio success of HBAM probably inhibited them for future successful tracks from No Name Face or Sick Cycle Carousel. That said, HBAM stands out as very different from Lifehouse's style, which back then I couldn't appreciate as I do now.
For me, this song brings on some extreme nostalgia. The burnout factor hasn't been evident for the past 4 years, so it probably won't ever be.

I love it, it's easily my favorite from them and it's hella catchy. This had quite a run on CHR/Pop even though it never reached #1. I thought it'd never leave the charts.

When this song came out I had no idea who had sung it and loved it. I tried figuring out who sung it, but never could. Recently though I heard an interview with Lifehouse, and they played a tiny clip of this, for some reason that I don't remember and I was like this is who sings "You And Me!?" :o Anyways, I love this.

You don't remember how everyone obsessed over it and wanted it to hit #1 and its chart movements were watched so closely because, no matter how much airplay it got, people still loved it.
Throw in a few "the little song that could" comments (that saying makes me cringe).

If by everyone you mean the 0.0001% of the world that posted on the old R&R boards and liked the song, then yes I guess I remember that.
