A great duet between the Pet Shop Boys & Dusty Springfield :)
In 1988, this made #2 Hot 100 & CHR/Pop plus a #2 in the UK.

This is one of my favorite PSB songs. I had never heard of Dusty Springfield prior to this.

Yeah as cheesy as this is, and not really my style, I still really do like this, and their super cheesy "where the streets have no name/can't take my eyes off of you." i think i give them a pass as opposed to other corny stuff because i remember the original "west end girls" produced by Bobby Orlando, and I was into a lot of that cats productions for a while. Will do a thread about a couple of his songs some other time.

Good song. Haven't heard that in 40 forevers
Dusty Springfield has some hits during the 60s with Wishin' And Hopin', You Don't Have To Say You Love Me and Son-Of-A Preacher Man among others.

A decent song, but not my favorite by either. "West End Girls" by the Pet Shop Boys is one of my favorite songs from the '80's. My favorite Dusty song is "Windmills of My Mind", and her original version of "The Look of Love" is very sexy. I love it, and don't understand why it's not played more often.

Good song, one of my favorite new wave tunes in fact. I also like "Always On My Mind" from the Pet Shop Boys, but I was never a huge fan of "West End Girls". It's a shame people assume you're gay if you like this group.

I have heard this too many times, you can go to just about any store and hear this. I don't really like this anymore even though I have their "Singles" CD. "Love Comes Quickly" is their best IMO.

...Done To Deserve This?"
#2 Hot 100, #2 UK, #2 CHR/Pop
I love this song. Gave Dusty a well deserved comeback, even if it was sadly brief. The bridge to this was just a killer
"And I don't know How I'm gonna get through How i'm gonne get through How i'm gonna get through How i'm gonna get through"

Great song. One of my favorites. It had a rediculously short chart run on R&R. 36-31-18-12-8-6-3-2-4-11-19-30. I'll never get sick of this song! "How Can You Expect To Be Taken Seriously" is another good song by the Pet Shop Boys

I love the Pet Shop Boys and this one is one of my favorites by them. One of only 2 #1 songs they had, the other being "Go West".
February 7, 1988
01 02 What Have I Done To Deserve This - Pet Shop Boys/Dusty Springfield 02 03 Father Figure - George Michael 03 05 Never Gonna Give You Up - Rick Astley 04 04 I Live For Your Love - Natalie Cole 05 01 Seasons Change - Expose 06 06 Can't Stay Away From You - Miami Sound Machine 07 07 Never Can Say Goodbye - Communards 08 08 Can't Wait - Nancy Martinez 09 09 Out Of The Blue - Debbie Gibson 10 10 Come Into My Arms - Judy Torres
A particularly static and competetive top 10 which included 4 former #1 songs...(#4-7). The following week alot of fresh blood came into the top 10.
"WHIDTDT" stayed at the top for 3 weeks and was the #12 song of 1988

"How Can You Expect To Be Taken Seriously" is another good song by the Pet Shop Boys I wouldn't call twelve weeks ridiculously short. Maybe it was a tad shorter than the average chart run for a #2 song (the average back in 1988 was about 13 weeks), but ridiculously short would be something like 8 or 9 weeks.

Actually, I was rather disappointed with its 5 week top 10 chart run. When it leaped from 31-18, I thought it was going to number 1. But that was right after the holiday break.

Actually, the holiday break had little to to with its gigantic leap, though it did explain its relatively weak move in its second week (36-31). Back then, there was only a one-week break during the holiday and many stations froze their playlists for the two-week period. As a result, the January 1, 1988 chart (counted down the week of January 9) was without much chart action, but it picked up the next week. But you're right; five weeks is unusually short for a number two song (though it was close the week before it hit the top ten and after it fell out).

It is one of my favorite 80's hits, as well as my favorite Pet Shop Boys tunes. It unfortunately does not get a lot of airplay from some 80's outlets & Hot AC. I hear "West-End Girls" & "Always On My Mind" alot, but it is very rare that I hear this one. Great song.
