This song is an anthem. Madonna gave one hell of a vocal performance, and the video is one of her best. Hit #2 on the Hot 100.
On a negative note, the best version of it has yet to be released. The album version is seriously lacking IMO, as is single version. The video version based on Shep Pettibone's Remix/Edit and Local Mix has yet to see the light of day. I'm waiting Madge...

Great song! It's one of my least favorite from "Like a Prayer," but still a goodie.
1) Like A Prayer (album version) 2) Oh Father (single version) 3) Cherish (Immaculate Collection version) 4) Keep It Together (single version) 5) Express Yourself (Immaculate Collection version)

This song just doesn't do it for me. I despise the lame version included on the Like A Prayer album, and the version on the Immaculate Collection isn't all that either.
The video was always the most amazing thing about this song, IMO.

I'm with you too. I never liked the one on her Like A Prayer album, or on the Immaculate Collection. I like the Video Mix better. But the one she performed during her Blonde Ambition Tour was the best! I liked that one the best.

I didn't like the album version at all, but the Immaculate Collection version is much better. And of course the video is perfection

I remember how this song really took off on the R&R chart and I felt sure it would be number one. Instead, it spent four weeks at number three.
The R&R charts in the summer of 1989 seemed to have a touch of 1982 in them, as there were several songs that spent a month in their peak position. "So Alive" by Love And Rockets peaked at number five for that long, and "Lay Your Hands On Me" by Bon Jovi also spent four weeks at its peak of number nine.
Back to "Express Yourself", I thought the song was pretty decent, which was rather a surprise. I usually didn't like songs like this, but this was an exception.
This song was U93's number one song of 1989.

A great anthem.
The best mix is the one heard in the video (not the lenghtier dance-mix one, but the one on the 45 vinyl- the 7" edit). It has all the necessary elements. The album version is OK, but it's missing key instruments on a good amount of the verses (only kicking in at the end of the second verse). The Pettibone mix on Immaculate Collection is great for boogie-woogieng though. :)

The video was excellent, but I'm not really a big fan of the song.

The original album version is far better than The Immaculate Collection version. Unfortunately, the version on TIC was the first one I heard, and I thought it was all right. When I heard it on LAP, I thought it was exceptional. It's a fantastic anthem that won't be forgotten.

I still don't think GaGa's Born This Way sounds like EY.

It's not one of her better moments, but it has a great singalong quality.

LOVE this song. Well, the remix of it. I hate the album version. I generally listen to the Immaculate Collection version but I like the Celebration edit too. It's a shame the exact edit from the video has never been released before.

The version with the 7-inch mix, I believe, is on The Immaculate Collection home video; I forget if it's also on TIC DVD.

Gave Like A Prayer a spin yesterday and the album version is amazing. I much prefer that one and its variations than the other remix, so sad that it was basically written out of her discography and the live versions are based on the remix...

^You don't think something's missing from the album version? I hear it most in the first verse, though- the rest is fine.
Live versions of LAP also usually gravitate toward mixes (as the original version does not have beats during the verses).

Meh. Never been big on this one, but will not knock the inspiration & influence it possess. The vibe & message is a bit cheesy for me. Naturally, the production is the true highlight for me.

The radio mix is a lot better than the album version. I like it, but it's not my favorite single from Like A Prayer. I like "Like A Prayer" and "Cherish" a lot more and maybe even "Keep It Together". I don't know about the radio mix being better than the album version (and I don't care enough to take a listen to it), but I agree with the rest of this comment. "Cherish" and "Keep It Together" are my favorite singles from LAP.

I didn't mind the original version, the remix kinda kick it up a notch. 🤣
It had a great female empowered message overall.
