This may be one of the best pop songs of the last 10 years. I heard this on the radio yesterday for the first time in forever (Savage Garden are Australian so I guess they're pretty popular here), and I had forgotten how good this song is. Especially compared to the rest of their stuff. There's a little bit of everything here, including that cinematic piano & strings ending that sort of channels Spacehog's 'In The Meantime' and Faith No More's 'Epic'. Shame this didn't have more chart success.

Yes, this is by far and away my favorite song by them, and it's the only Savage Garden song I still listen to. I was always surprised that it wasn't very successfull.

I liked this song. It was highly underrated. It could have done sooooo much better.

This may be one of the best pop songs of the last 10 years ever.

I also loved this song and it is their strongest single, easily. The shame here lies that nothing else that was ever released by them comes anywhere near this song.

I could've sworn this had a topic already...(but there are other songs that two have two open topics )
My favorite from them is "Crash and Burn", but this isn't far behind.
IIRC, other places got "Break Me, Shake Me" as the fourth single, while only the States got a TTM&B re-release.[/font]

I like the song, but I wouldn't go as far as to say that this is the best pop song EVER. Gosh, over the last 50-75 years, this is THE best song? Some people just like to heighten the drama level in these threads.
While I do like the song, I would not say it is my favorite Savage Garden single. Honestly, Truly Madly Deeply is my favorite from them. Here's how I would rank their radio singles.
(1) Truly Madly Deeply (2) I Want You (3) Crash & Burn (4) To The Moon & Back (5) I Knew I Loved You (6) The Animal Song (7) Affirmation

If I made a personal best pop songs ever list, this would certainly be in the top 20, maybe top 10.

I remember that, when doing my personal Top 30 charts, I somehow overlooked this song and didn't put it on my chart until October, 1997, when it had pretty much run its course - during its first release. In the summer of 1998, it was re-released and, at the time, it was still on my chart. Instead of moving it back up, I just slowed its descent (which wasn't that fast to begin with). It became one of the longest running songs on my personal charts.

Don't yell at me, I just said it might be one of the best from the last 10 years. And I don't really listen to pop radio, so what the hell do I know.

I just found it a little over the top to call this song one of the best pop songs ever. It's done a lot in these topics, and I feel that many of us (myself included) tend to overdramatize to express how much we like something. No harm, no foul. :)

Easily their best. It was worth the 8 or 9 bucks getting the cd single with a couple of different mixes.

I hate this song.
I prefer their ballads. They had 2 #1's in america - Truly Madly Deeply & I knew I loved you. I like the above aswell as crash and burn.

I hate this song. I prefer their ballads. They had 2 #1's in america - Truly Madly Deeply & I knew I loved you. Yeah, and they were two grossly, grossly, GROSSLY overplayed songs. I still can't believe I gave IKILY four weeks at number one on my chart. A huge chart regret (although, since I never hear it on the radio anymore, at least I can tolerate it). But I never liked TMD at all in the first place and after hearing it every damn time I turned on the radio, that made me like it a thousand times less. Needless to say, that didn't appear anywhere on my personal chart. That song goes on my list right alongside "I Love You Always Forever" for songs that I don't care if I never hear again. Unfortunately, unless I stay away from AC stations and wear earplugs everytime I go to the store, neither of which I'm about to do, I'm sure I'll hear it again eventually. Give me "To The Moon And Back" any day!

He was referring to their ballad hits, both of which were number one songs. True...but as it happens, those two were also their only two hits to top the Billboard chart (I Want You peaked at #4 there). I'd assumed he was referring to that fact.

I like this but I thought they had other songs that were better, especially from their debut album.

To The Moon and Back originally peaked at #37 when it was released as the follow-up to "I Want You" but got re-issued as the follow-up to "Truly Madly Deeply" and reached #24 in 1998

My favorite Savage Garden song. I was glad when it was re-released. I bought the CD single when it was released the first time.

Oh lord do I have a rant to unload on this topic. This is going to be ridiculous, I'm serious.
#1. In my opinion this is the greatest song EVER. Lyrically, melodically, vocally, instrumentally, this song is perfect. I can honestly say that I think this is the most well written song that has ever been released. It could have been SO cheesy and cliche, but the way it was written is really special. I heard this song before it was released to radio. I had the CD because of my childhood obsession with "I Want You" (that never changed, I also think that song is one of the best songs in history). TTMAB was played quite frequently on my local stations, which I loved. I have always admired the heck out of this song. It made me really take notice of Darren as a songwriter and vocalist as I grew up and understood the true potential of this song. (the version that they did at the 1997 ARIA Awards is the greatest thing I've ever heard)
As much as I love to see that TTMAB was most people's favorite SG song, and maybe their only liked SG song, what is UP with all the dogging on Savage Garden!? I really hate that they're known for their dang ballads. Truly deserved all the attention it got, IKILY, not so much. Truly is the ONLY song of that much popularity that I have never gotten sick of. It's unique and well written, and yes very overplayed so I understand the hating on that end, but give it some credit. I've listened to so many other love ballads... in comparison, especially these days, Truly is a rare gem.
One more thing. Savage Garden is one of those bands whose albums are worth listening to, the whole album and all the non-single songs. Their debut album and Affirmation are incredible albums and honestly the ballads that made them famous do NOT do this band justice. I have every dang Savage Garden song out there, even the obscure B-sides and they are amazing. They're worth listening to and they're nothing like the singles that were released. Savage Garden is the only band that I have proudly stood by since 1997. There was never a year in between then and now that I was ever ashamed of being a fan of theirs because those boys were undeniably talented. I've stuck with Darren for almost 16 years... no other artist has been worth it.

Some people just like to heighten the drama level in these threads. I would go as far to say it's the best pop song EVER. And I'm not heightening the drama. I've listened to a ridiculous number of songs from all decades and in my opinion nothing has come close to this song. I have played this song almost daily since the day I got their CD, 16 years ago. Not once have I gotten sick of it. The more I hear it, the more I respect it. It's not drama, it's personal opinion.
