First released in 1980, it was re-released in 1989. It still gets an incredible amount of airplay today on AC stations. While the opening lyrics ("She's just 16 years old, leave her alone they say") could make for fodder in a "bad lyrics on AC" topic, it's a classic. (If you were not a veteran of the old R&R boards, you probably wouldn't get that.)

Did anybody ever figure out why this song didn't chart on R&R when it was re-released, despite getting a decent amount of airplay?

Reminds me of the time this song was played on AT10 last year. Somebody on the board got upset because Casey said it was from 1989 and played the 1980 version instead (or vice versa). :)

I like the melody, but the lyrics creep me out and the guy SCREAMS at the end, so much that I seriously think he's gonna blow his lungs out whenever I hear it.

Wasn't this Rick Dees' theme song from his failed late night TV show?

It could've been, but the producers of his short-lived talk show decided, "Hey, this song by that Benny guy sucks. Let's just write up a different arrangement of Rick's show and cancel it after two months so that ABC won't make this mistake again."

The music reminds me of Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over" (which I was familiar with before this), especially the intro.[/font]

But the new version was overshadowed by the original.

KKFR Phoenix was probably the station that gave it new life. They brought back "Red Red Wine" and "When I'm With You" from Sheriff from the dead.

I had a chance contact with Benny last week... he was fun to talk to...
I wasn't really too into music the first time this song came out in 1980, but in 1989 when it was re-released it became one of my all-time favorites....
This song is the ONLY song ever by an artist to reach Billboard's top 20 on two separate occasions... it hit #11 in 1980, and then #20 in 1989 when it was re-released by Curb Records...

I like the song, but as I've listened to it over the years, the lyrics are rather creepy. "She's just sixteen years old, leave her alone, they say..." I won't go there.

There have been a few others. "The Monster Mash" by Bobby "Boris" Pickett hit the Top Ten twice and "The Twist" by Chubby Checker hit #1 twice. Possibly even hit the Top 20 three times, counting his recording with The Fat Boys in 1988, but I'm not sure where that peaked.

IIRC, Casey Kasem (or it could've been Rick Dees or even Shadoe Stevens) said that since Chubby Checker didn't get label credit for it, it didn't count as a chart hit for him. Even if the Fat Boys would've gone top ten with"The Twist", it would've only counted for the Fat Boys and not for Chubby.

Yeah... most likely, the qualifier with Benny would be that it was his only chart single, and it hit the Top 20 twice (making him a unique one-hit-wonder). Also to clarify, the Curb release (which was a re-recording) didn't actually chart. It was the original Polydor recording that recharted in 1989 (albeit with a new catalog number).

Great song. Although totally different styles, this one ranks up there with Winger's "Seventeen" as one the best pedophile songs of all time.

It's strange that when this song was originally released in 1980, it reached #11, but I never heard it on the radio at that time. It wasn't until 1989 when the song was re-released that I heard it consistently.
Another funny thing: in its original release, "Into the Night" didn't make the AC chart; but it did in its re-release. Now, it seems to be played only on AC radio stations.

And the 1989 re-release of "Into the Night" missed hitting the R&R CHR/Pop chart due to some error or something.

Maybe some stations reported it as "(Take You) Into The Night" (per "My Happy Ending" syndrome)?

I'd never heard this AC smash until I started listening to Delilah at night. Reached #1 on my personal chart in 2004 - JAM
"She's just 16 years old...leave her alone...they say.."

Probably my favorite song about statutory rape! ;)
Hit the Top 20 on the Hot 100 twice (in 1980 and 1989), although R&R chose not to let it chart the second time.
