Hard to figure out why this didn't even scratch the Adult Contemporary chart in 1980, but it did pretty well on AC when it was re-released in 1989. Changing times, perhaps?

Actually, even though for the 1989 "Into the Night" re-release despite reaching #20 on Billboard it never made the R&R CHR/Pop chart due to some charting system error or something (similar to Rick Dees shutting out "Ms. Jackson" off his chart in 2001 and AT40 with Ryan Seacrest shutting out until its #13 debut "My Happy Ending" in 2004).

Maybe some of you from the old R&R boards know the answer to this from your conversations with R&R staff. I don't remember if we ever discussed it on the boards or not. Benny Mardones' Into The Night's rechart got to #20 on the Hot 100, #25 on BB's separate airplay chart, but yet did not crack R&R's Top 40 at all. I was doing the 41-100 at that time, adding up all the playlists; and you couldn't say "well it just didn't have enough airplay on R&R's reporters", because it had more than enough points in my system to have made it, more than any other single had ever had which didn't make it, and more than most had when they did. What was R&R's deal? It had to be a conscious decision to leave it out. Send Me An Angel recharted around the same time; but of course, that was a remix, so that may have been the rationale there.

Kinda odd how it didn't re-chart on R&R... but either way, I think it's a pretty good song.

Daniel, it was the case of not being a remix of the 1980 hit and "not being promoted by the record company". R&R also didn't allow God Bless The U.S.A. to re-chart in 2001 based upon the same rule that Ron R. pointed out on the old board.

I always heard the original 1980 version growing up, still do. In fact when my local Hot AC station would its "80's Weekends" they always labeled this song as being from 1989.

Probably my favorite song about statutory rape! ;) When I heard that line for the first time I was like "huh?!" too, lol. Here's the story behind "Into The Night", though, thanks to songfacts.com: Anyway, here's the song: I prefer the 1989 version ^ as the instrumention is more prounounced. The breakdown in the middle of this ballad is superb, as is its melody. Great ballad, very romantic!

Here's the awful original video.
I thought he was an ugly woman in the beginning of the video!

Didnβt realize how different the versions of the song sound. Love the original and how it just launches into the verse.
The original is one of the creepiest videos ever

This song (the original 1980 version) is a a guilty pleasure and I often heard it on the AC stations. The borderline creepiness of the first line of the first verse as well as the unintentionally funny, over-the-top screaming towards the end should be a turn-off for me. Yet I like this song for some strange reason.
