OK, so Warrant were the very prototype of the Johnny-Come-Latelys who were exploiting a red-hot fad like hair-metal undeniably was in 1989. And while not as big as run-of-the-mill power-ballads like "Heaven" and "I Saw Red" or metaphor-that-is-not-very-subtle rock ditty "Cherry Pie", "Down Boys" has some strenghths to it, be it the great intro, the infectious guitar riff or the none-more-catchy chorus. The lyrics - as in almost 100% of hair-metal bands - are a complete afterthought, but hey, they didn't claim to be following the footsteps of Bob Dylan. :)
Oh, and the song went all the way to #27 on the Hot 100, being their debut single of their equally debut platinum album "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich".

According to a story on Casey's Top 40, this song was used in an ad campaign for motorcycle safety (I don't remember ever seeing those PSA's though).

Good song, but I actually prefer their stereotypical by the numbers stuff

Out of their hits, I only liked "Heaven" better than this one... an outstanding song!

LOVE this song! Warrant are one of my favorite bands from that era, love them! And Jani Lane was so hot back then, it's a shame that he's nuts now.
