The lyrics of Iron Maiden songs are almost always far more intelligent and eloquent than those of other metal bands, and it's almost always the lyrics that draw me into their music. But it might just as well have been the energy and the over-abundance of pop hooks that drew me into this song at first. It's a rollicking good time, and don't be too sure that heavy metal is no fun until you've heard it.
About a minute in, there's a dramatic tempo change that will make you feel like you're on a horse, galloping across the plain, a-rootin' and a-tootin' and a-shootin' them injuns.
It's an emotional reminder of the human cost inflicted by the settlement of this great nation we call America, and it's written by bassist Steve Harris.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Run To The Hills
White man came across the sea
He brought us pain and misery
He killed our tribes, he killed our creed
He took our game for his own need
We fought him hard we fought him well
Out on the plains we gave him hell
But many came too much for cree
Oh will we ever be set free?
Riding through dustclouds and barren wastes
Galloping hard on the plains
Chasing the redskins back to their holes
Fighting them at their own game
Murder for freedom a stab in the back
Women and children and cowards attack
Run to the hills run for your lives
Run to the hills run for your lives
Soldier blue on the barren wastes
Hunting and killing their game
Raping the women and wasting the men
The only good indians are tame
Selling them whisky and taking their gold
Enslaving the young and destroying the old
Run to the hills run for your lives
(repeat to end)
