The video really added that certain something to the song, which is just OK in my books. The album had many better songs than this one IMO.

Absolutely amazing video, but the song itself isn't up to par with Billie Jean or Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'

Fairly good song. I think it hit #1 in R&R.

I agree that this wouldn't really be the classic that it is without the video.

This song brings back so many memories. When I was a little girl (and I mean little because I must have been about 3 years old) I remember watching the Making of... video he put out of it. I was totally fascinated by how they applied the makeup and I had the biggest crush on him. Great song too. Halloween just doesn't feel right without hearing it.

Do you remember the 1984 Top 10 hit by Michael Jackson called "Thriller" which was the last single (seventh) from his album of the same name? This song entered Billboard's Hot 100 at #20 but only got to #4. I like the album version where at the last couple of minutes ghoulish actor Vincent Price does a rap which may remind you of his rhyming segment intros used in the 1971 Canadian produced kid show "The Hillerious House of Frightenstein" (The Thriller version with Vincent Price was only played once on AT40 in March 1984 during a week when Charlie Van Dyke guest hosted for Casey Kasem).
There was also a long Thriller music video with Michael Jackson and former Playboy Centerfold and Classy Curl TV commercial model Ola Ray in it.

Song was #1 in airplay but only reached top 5 on hot 100....but it was released LONG time after the album came out.
if it was released right after "Beat It"...probably would have topped hot 100 too.
LOVE the video...song is also good but not his best.

Not only that but I think it had a late singles release as well. It debuted on the Hot 100 at #20 (and then shot straight to #7 the following week), which I think happened only a couple of weeks before airplay peaked.

This was one of the best songs on the album even before the video was made- it was very popular- it was the only song on that side I even liked.

I always loved this song. Lyrics are a bit ridiculous but that chorus gets me everytime! What a jam.

I loved the video more than the song. Everything about the video is freaky, from his transformations to the dancing zombies.

R&R chart run: 23-13-8-3-1-2-3-3-9-16-24-36. It was on the R&R chart a couple weeks before it debuted at number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Jump" by Van Halen knocked it out of number 1.

Strange that this song fell out of #1 in only its sixth week on the chart. I wonder if that's some kind of record.

Loved this, though I do prefer several others from him.
Also hit #3 on the R&B chart.

Although this is my least favorite song on "Thriller," there's no way to deny that it's a classic.

I have a question about the THRILLER album. It has been certified with 29 MILLION in sales for years now. I read an article quite some time ago that Thriller crossed the 30 MILLION mark back then and that was awhile back so by now it must be around 31 Million. I wonder why his label has not certified it for 30 Million by now???

I wonder how much this has sold as a single? It pops up just like Mariah's "AIWFCIY" every year. That would actually be a great song vs. song. Anybody know the sales?

Per Wikipedia (take it with a grain of salt) it's closing in on 6 million. Not sure on the physical/digital breakdown.

SoundScan sales through early October 2017: 4,099,000Certified Platinum as a physical single. Certified Gold as a digital single. So that's 5 million/5xP in USA sales.

Cheesy, it's iconic and a Halloween staple but video aside the song isn't really that great. Definitely not one of Michael's best.

Just too creepy for my tastes. I much prefer his other singles from Thriller like Human Nature and Billie Jean.
