This song kind of have a hip-hop/jazz fusion to it and it sounds alternately different from the commercialized "gangsta rap" that we are so fused with. This song caught my ear on the first listen back in '93. I like the song so much, that I added that rascal right then (it was like #9 on my personal chart after it started getting more familiar). It's one of those songs that radio WANTS you to forget but those who listened to it won't. They also followed it up with Where I'm From.
"I'm cool like 'dat/I flow like 'dat/I funk like 'dat......" Sounds pretty hip to me.

The sound was good but other groups were doing it better at the time, and this one was just annoying. Perhaps that's why it crossed over.

Yeah, it was a pretty good song. Reminds me of this guy in my college newswriting class who loved it.
Casey said that it sampled something but I don't remember which song.

GREAT song, but I liked the follow-up, "9th Wonder", better.
I still remember the video to this song.

Samples "Stretchin" performed by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers.
I like this song.

Awesome song, very "tight" track. My man ClassicCase (Superbreeze on R&R message board) "be bringin' back the jamz."

I just liked all the different adjectives he substituted in the sentence instead of "cool."
For example: (This is totally the wrong order, but who could remember the proper order after so many years without hearing it?)
I'm cool like dat/I roll like dat/I jive like dat/I'm black like dat/I act like dat/ etc...

I thought they were actually a pretty good group with quite a few good songs. But I think they were seen as kind of a fad. Pretty unfortunate...
"Flyin' High In The Brookyln Sky" was my favorite by them.

"Reachin" was one of the first CDs I remember buying, thanks to this track. Needless to say, I liked this a lot back then, and I still dig it now, though I haven't listened to it in a looong time.

This tune got to #15 on the Hot 100 in 1993 but the group never had another top 40 hit and the group disappeared fromt the rap scene soon afterward

Wouldn't you love to see Digable Planets, Arrested Development, and the Black Eyed Peas do a song together???

Wouldn't you love to see Digable Planets, Arrested Development, and the Black Eyed Peas do a song together??? Maybe on the BEP's next album. After all, since Fergie joined, they always have an old-style-BEP track on their albums (cf. "Boogie 2 B" on Elephunk and "Like That" on Monkey Business). ;)

This is a hip-hop classic. I am always surprised they weren't more successful. Great lyrics.

I like this. Should be a classic. Not "should be" but "is" in my book. I spin this song very often actually. Great songs never age.

Jazz could even be found in Hip Hop. This Grammy winning smash hit #15 on Hot 100, #6 R&B / Hip Hop. You may never hear it on Jazz radio, but it'll never sound out of place at a Starbucks near you. Very chill.

There were a lot of great rap tracks in the 90s that interpolated jazz songs, but I thought this song was annoying.

One of the best 90s hip hop records. Often heard this song on B96 and WGCI when I was younger.
