1987 was a great year!

Wow, everyone seemed to get tired of Cyndi Lauper quickly! She fell from just inside the Top 40 to #81! Almost reminiscent of the large drops on the chart in 1982. But nothing can compare to those, as we all know.

I see three songs fell ten or more spots out of the top ten. That's a rather large number. I see "Midnight Blue" at #72. I remember it had a huge fall within the top 40, like 20+ positions.

^yeah, a few weeks before, it fell 12-37. That was one of the biggest drops I had ever seen on AT40 (needless to say, I wasn't yet listening to AT40 until 1986, so I don't remember all those songs that fell from the chart from up near the Top Ten in 1982 and then again in 1984).

Nice flashback. I remember this like it was only yesterday. I know many more songs on this chart than this week's Hot 100. I even remember the number 75 song "Weapons of Love" by The Truth, and the number 80 song, "Right Next Door' by Robert Cray.

One question. Can anyone tell me why 99.9 percent of the time, the number 100 song was not a debut record? On the Hot 100 there was about a 5 year span from 1983-1988 where the number 100 song was always an older song falling down the chart. Anyone know anything about this?

I seem to remember that during the mid-'80s, Billboard had a policy that a single had to have a minimum number of stations playing it in order for it to be eligible to debut. That was probably enough to keep songs from entering near the very bottom of the chart.

Wow that makes me feel old, man! Anyway despite that I was upset that AT40 was unavailable during that period where I lived, but I remember seeing this chart anyway. Let's talk about the the wells and betters :

Wells:
1. Lots and lots of great songs on the Hot 100
2. Lots of chart action for new artists
3. The top 5 was dominated by foriegn acts/artists
4. Turn-over on hits were much better than today. IMO the more turn -over the more singles you can generate from an LP. They certainly don't do that as much today.
Oh and by the way, lately for some reason I've been spinning Cyndi Lauper's remake quite a bit before reading this.


Betters:
1. More Urban radio staples should have made the 40 such as the close calls include Anita Baker, Cameo, and Cover Girls (probably much more dance).
