This is the song that got me into Paula. However, I didn't care much for "Forever Your Girl."

as far back as I can remember starting to listen to music... there are a handful of songs that I would say eventually impacted the "culture" music would lure me into....
this song is almost at the top of that list...
how weird...

If I remember right, "Straight Up" was Paula's 2nd single after "Knocked Out" failed to make the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100. It turned out that "Straight Up" became her 1st major hit single - and her signature song.

Now, I find it somewhat bland. I also remember it being a sure shot on the Rick Dees Weekly Top 40

"Straight Up" first got airplay Fall 1988 on KMEL San Francisco instead of Paula Abdul's "It's Just the Way That You Love Me".
Some early 45 pressings of "Straight Up" have a future Paula Abdul #1 song "Cold Hearted" on the B side.

Easily one of her best songs.
Also hit #1 Dance and #2 R&B.

Definitely the signature song by her and the one that radio kept up with. Even a decent lot of non-PA fans admit to liking it.
I wasn't that big on FYG either and those guest vocals would have been better left off imo.

This is essentially the only song from her that I hear on the radio these days. I'm thinking about checking her material out since she was so huge back then.

I loved the FYG album back in the day and still enjoy it. This by far is her most-played track.

ICONIC. This song still goes so hard and the video is perfection. Love the bridge and breakdown especially.

I heard this song for the first time in 2013 when it was covered by a contestant on American Idol. I loved it right off the bat.
Probably my favorite by Paula.

Easily Paula Abdul's best song although there are a few others that I do like from her. I often heard this as an 80s flashback on the AC stations in my market (Lite FM 93.9, 101.9 the Mix, and 100.3) when I was younger. I'm also pretty sure B96 played this and some of her other 80s songs as gold titles back then as well.

This song broke the spin record for most spins on pop radio in a week in 1989...which would be broken months later by Like A Prayer.
