A year after Marvin Gaye's death in 1984, tributes to the lost singer hit #1 back-to-back on my chart. The first was written by Lionel Richie. UU-BRU Internet Radio For Week Ending April 13, 1985 (Rank This Week, Last Week, Artist, Title) 01 03 Diana Ross - Missing You 02 02 Madonna - Crazy For You 03 01 Bruce Springsteen - I'm On Fire 04 05 Don Henley - All She Wants To Do Is Dance 05 04 USA For Africa - We Are The World 06 07 Go West - We Close Our Eyes 07 10 Commodores - Nightshift 08 12 Dionne Warwick & Glenn Jones - Finder Of Lost Loves 09 06 Madonna - Material Girl 10 11 Eric Clapton - Forever Man Two weeks later, The Commodores followed suit with a song that also paid tribute to Jackie Wilson. UU-BRU Internet Radio For Week Ending April 27, 1985 (Rank This Week, Last Week, Artist, Title) 01 02 Commodores - Nightshift 02 01 Diana Ross - Missing You 03 04 Don Henley - All She Wants To Do Is Dance 04 05 Go West - We Close Our Eyes 05 03 Bruce Springsteen - I'm On Fire 06 06 USA For Africa - We Are The World 07 07 Madonna - Crazy For You 08 10 Bryan Adams - Heaven 09 09 Patti LaBelle - New Attitude 10 ** John Cafferty - Tough All Over These tributes did extremely well on my year end chart for 1985. The Commodores ranked at #2, while Diana Ross finished at #3. www.keystonehighways.com/uubru1985.html:)

Em, you must have missed Marvin that much, huh? ;) I like both of them songs as a matter of fact I was just thinlking about aquiring the song ("Missing You") yesterday. I would often dedicate this song to the ones that I love and miss so much (and still alive by the way).

Sure did. Actually, "Nightshift" breathed new life into "Missing You". Diana Ross peaked at #15 the first week of January 1985 and fell off the chart three weeks later. "Missing You" re-entered my chart on February 23rd just as The Commodores were closing in on the Top Ten.
Ironically, The Commodores stalled at #10, fell for a few weeks and shot to the top just like Diana Ross.

And the chart momentum they sustained in the process helped to put them high on the year end chart. "Into The Groove" spent twelve weeks at #1? Wow, you must have REALLY liked that song!

Absolutely. I use the inverse point system which awards longevity. The songs spent 52 total weeks on my chart between them. You know, the whole issue of "Into The Groove" affected my chart for several weeks during the spring of 1985. At the time, the song was not going to be released commercially. I remember making my chart each week starting around March of 1985 with a spot for Madonna to debut. Yet week after week, no single was released. At the time, I only charted 45's, no 12" singles or LP cuts. >:( Finally, ITG was available only on the B-side of the "Angel" 12 inch single. By that time I was so glad to finally get my hands on the record that it debuted at #1 on my chart. That scenario made a "rule" change on my chart. I mentioned it briefly on chart history page HERE. If ITG had been available earlier, it probably would have spent 16 or 17 weeks at #1. Nonetheless, it held the record for the longest run at the top until 2002. It is by far my favorite song by Madonna and still ranks among my favorite tracks of all time. :)

"Nightshift" reached #3 on the Hot 100 while "Missing You" went to #10 around the same time and became the last major pop hit for both acts in the succesful career

They were back-to-back #1 R&B Hits on the Billboard Chart as well: "Missing You" stayed at #1 for three weeks and was replaced by "Nightshift," which remained there for four weeks.

"Missing You" isn't one of my favourite Diana songs... she had better. It's decent though.
I like "Nightshift" though... shows that they could still get hits without Lionel Richie. One of their best, I'd say.

Marvin Gaye was killed 40 years ago today. I was in Florida watching the news when I found out.

i did not realize Lionel Ritchie wrote Missing You . also interesting that his former group did the other song . Night Shift was the better song i think and a tribute for two legends . Jackie Wilson also died in 1984 on January 21st.
