I did an extensive search, couldn't find a thread for this anywhere (which is surprising, but)... this was her #1 Hot 100/#2 R&B huge hit from her first album, one of my top 5 singles of hers ever. Have it on repeat tonight... I think it can stand as a definitive track for her on all counts.

One of my favorites as well. I used to love it when she could sing in that low register. That kills me. And the bridge is the best part...

She sings better than the album version at Tokyo Dome in 1996. Amazing performance!

Not my favorite of hers, but it's not as overplayed as some of her other material.

As much as I like IDWC, the album had much more hit worthy tracks. "All In Your Mind","Prisoner" (what was going to be the 5th single),"Alone In Love", and "You Need Me" could have all been #1s. I would add in "Vanishing" but the track wasn't like anything on the radio at time and I'd hate to have seen it fail.
I've only heard this song on the 90's on XM radio. I have not once heard it on FM. Alot of her material is udnerplayed it seems. Well at least here in NYC. Z100 only plays TEOM material, "Fantasy","Always Be My Baby", and I've heard both "Dreamlover" & "Someday" once. The New 102.7 & KTU have always played "Emotions" and the Daydream singles. 102 tends to play "Someday" at times. Last summer KTU was spinning "Can't Let Go", which was a suprise, even though it's her best ballad released as a single.

I like it. I just wish it got more airplay these days. I'd much rather here this than, say, "Hero."

Good song, but my least favourite single from that album. Still, it's nice to hear to this day.

I disagree with my post made nearly two years ago lol. I've since heard it on an FM station too, WBLS. I always treated it as a filler single but I've come to find a true appreciation for the track.
The emotion conveyed is very convincing and it really shows in how the songs builds to become such a dramatic ballad and regresses back into subtleness. Also, her voice is showcased so beautifully and even powerfully without even bothering to access her whistle register.

This is my second favorite single from her debut after "Love Takes Time," and she gave some gorgeous performances earlier in her career. Aside from Tommy Motolla basically pushing her to record a song in the style of "Careless Whisper," I've never understood why she dislikes this song so much.

I like it a lot, the live version from the Daydream Tour is above the album version though. That vocal is flawless! :'(

My second favorite single from her debut following "Vision Of Love". It's also one of her better songs.

Not my favorite of the four singles from the first album, but, still decent. What I like about it is that she's not reflecting on a relationship and longing for the guy or rejoicing in how fulfilled she feels because of him. She really should revisit some of the songs she has not performed in a while, rather than doing the same group of oldies like she's been doing.

Most of the songs she doesn't perform anymore aren't performed because she doesn't like them anymore. That's why "Vision Of Love" is the only song she performs from her debut. Not to mention, the other 3 singles aren't among her more memorable hits anyway.

I forget which tour it was when she threw the audience a bone by singing 15 seconds of "Close My Eyes." The highlight of the show. It would be nice to hear more of the earlier stuff but I realize her heart is not in it. I guess that's what CD's are for. I love IDWC by the way. I think Jason Castro covered it on Idol. Not great, but I give him points for not picking the obvious.

While I understand the frustration of fans that she keeps relatively the same old songs on her setlist from tour to tour and doesn't include less memorable hits or old album cuts, I also understand Mariah and her management's decision. Mariah is not exactly the most lucrative touring artist. She often struggles to sell out venues. In addition to that, her tours also don't typically garner significant critical praise. The last thing she needs getting out to the press is that she's "not even performing her best known songs".

I love this track. She occasionally sacrifices emotion for vocal showcasing, but not here. And that Daydream tour performance...

I can't believe Mariah doesn't like this. It's not one of her best but it's a great song and her vocals sound amazing.

My assumption is that she had minimal involvement with this song compared to most of her songs. She has writing credits on the track, but Narada Michael Walden also has writing credits and full production credits. I don't think Narada Michael Walden has ever been the kind of writer/producer to give the singers who record his song a lot of artistic freedom. I would assume that despite being listed as the lead writer, that was probably an agreement between Narada Michael Walden and Tommy Motolla. From what I've read about this song over the years, I think Tommy Motolla wanted her to record an R&B quiet storm ballad with latin tinges along the lines of "Careless Whisper," specifically requested that from Narada Michael Walden, and he basically brought Mariah a finished product to record, at which point Mariah probably made suggestions about changing a couple of the lines and added some vocal nuances. I think Mariah commented somewhere before that the one thing she really liked about hearing this song on the radio was to hear herself singing a ballad that sounded like some of the ballads that were big when she was in school (and she was a big George Michael fan at the time). Overall, it seems like Mariah never really cares much for the songs she's recorded that she has less involvement in. I think she wanted Ben Marguiles (who she wrote her demo with) to be more involved with the album. Sony financially screwed him over and got him out of the picture, although he has some credits on the album, and that was the end of Mariah's professional relationship with him.

^ Walter Afanasieff has said that he did the bulk of the production. All Narada did was create a rough demo that Walter ultimately polished. Narada himself talked about Mariah recording this song, saying that she was such a perfectionist in the studio that she would record the same line over and over until she got it exactly how she wanted it. He would convince her to give up and choose the ones she had recorded first, sort of rushing her. That's why she probably has bad memories associated with this song. The George Michael influence on Mariah's early work is confirmed here: www.mariahjournal.com/infozone/storybehindno1s.shtml#idwc And on a recent interview about the Music Box album, Afanasieff talked about George's influence on her again.

Yeah I think the sound of "One More Try" is evident in some of her Music Box ballads (especially the title track).

This is my second favorite single from her debut after "Love Takes Time," I though LTT was your least favorite single from her debut... "I Don't Wanna Cry" is wonderful and it has one of the best bridges of her entire discography. Also, according to Walter, Mariah actually loved "I Don't Wanna Cry". I don't know which of the two to believe. In any case she needs to bring it back. I'd take something like IDWC over the overperformed and boring "Shake It Off" any day.
