at just over 7 minutes, this was probably one of the longest singles ever pressed on 7" 45rmp vinyl. this sort of tune, with its long fadeout and endlessly repeated 'nah-nah-nah' lyrics, would have seemed hopelessly boring without mccartney's excellent scat vocals. speaking of which, i can't think of any other beatles songs that featured scat singing, can you?

Talk about epic. One of their classic songs, understandably, even if overrated.

IMO one of Macca's greatest vocal performances along with Helter Skelter. The scat singing at the end is superb I think, and IMHO he was really underrated as a vocalist. And quite honestly, at least for me, I can never get tired of the 4 minute fade out. This was in an era of pop music when best songs made it to #1 and not the manufactured crap that dominated top 40 charts for years on.

Great song, one of the Beatles biggest in the States. I really like it, even if over half the song consists of the "nah-nah-nah" part!
When this song came out, it must have been the longest song to date. A few years later, though, Don McLean's "American Pie" (another great track), was released and was even longer in length. Since then, there have been quite a few songs over 7 minutes long, though this is still rare of course.

This was in an era of pop music when best songs made it to #1 and not the manufactured crap that dominated top 40 charts for years on. And it also was an era where there was a free market in radio airplay (read: no clear channel). What a coincidence. I so wish I was alive back in 1964-70.

I made the tail end of that era. Wish I had been listening to radio from the beginning of 1964, because it would have been so exciting to witness the Beatles becoming popular, and all the exciting developments in music. Any type of music had a chance to chart and go to the top; it was mostly based on quality, creativity, and great melodies.
As for "Hey Jude", it was played so much for so long, and it does have that long, repetitive fade, that I did get tired of it, but I still think it deserving of being considered one of the all-time great songs. Year after year, it would consistently end up first on listeners polls that the stations would periodically conduct, that is, until "Stairway to Heaven" came out. #2 would usually be "Light My Fire". Other high-rankers were "Cherish", "House of the Rising Sun", "Wild Thing", "Sunshine of Your Love", and "In-a-Gadda-da-Vida".

· I remember Shadoe Stevens saying that "Rescue Me" was the highest debut on the Hot 100 since "Hey Jude."

Are you sure you don't mean "Let It Be"? That song was released after "Hey Jude" and it debuted on the Hot 100 all the way up at number six. Surprisingly, it didn't get to number one until three weeks later, since "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Simon & Garfunkel was too strong for it.

Since then, there have been quite a few songs over 7 minutes long, though this is still rare of course. Yes, but I believe that most of them were album tracks. A full-length version of American Pie was released on 45, but oddly it was two-sided; side one faded the song halfway through and side two picked up from that point. I remember a one-sided 45 version of Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven but I can't remember if it was an edit (I think it must have been). The album track is just over eight minutes long.

Wow, I never replied to this?
My favorite Beatles song and one of my favorite songs of all time. Not sure what I can say about it that hasn't been said already, though.

Wow - you've seen a 45 version of Stairway to Heaven? Was it an import, because all my sources have been that it never was released as a single and so it never charted on Billboard.

I do think this song is overrated. I also think a lot of songs by The Beatles are overrated.

There was at least one 45 for this song released in each of a few countries (US, UK, Japan, Germany), but I don't believe any of them were commercial singles.

wftn asks:
No, it was an American pressing. It was a promo single; one side was in stereo, the other mono. Your sources are no doubt correct since the single was only available to radio stations and record stores.

I think this song was written about Julian Lennon. Has anyone noticed all the Beatles songs that have been played on AT10 this year?

It was about Julian - John Lennon's son.
This was by far the Beatles' longest hit single in terms of time - clocked in at 7:11. "Matchbox" was their shortest at 1:37.

Released in 1968, "Hey Jude" is one of the Beatles' most famous songs. A double a-side with "Revolution", it spent nine weeks at the top of the Hot 100 and was the number one single of the year.
Written by Paul McCartney to comfort Julian Lennon during his parent's divorce, it is over seven minutes long and features an epic four minute coda. It is frequently cited as one of the greatest songs of all time, an accolade I'd have a hard time arguing with.

I agree with pretty much all that you've said, although I've heard it so much over the years that its impact has diminished to me personally.

Always been one of my least favourite Beatles songs. I am ready to do violence before the "na na na na na na na"s are finished.

Not my favorite ever of the Beatles but one of their great ones- like most all Paul songs, the lyrics don't really go anywhere but there are nice lines in it and the music is great,
