This is an excellent song...one of my favorite songs by Janet. The album is also her best, imo...

I think it peaked at #2 on both pop charts. I liked it because my local Top 40 station never played it (except during syndicated shows) so I didn't get burned out on it.

I got burned out on it the first time I heard it.
It had a fast-rise, fast-fall and, since it was only their second single, I didn't expect "Rhythm Nation 1814" to do as well as the "Control" album. But its chart performance was not a sign of things to come. The next five singles peaked either at number two or number one. The only song from the LP that did worse on the chart than the title track was "State Of The World" and even that didn't do too bad, peaking at number four. The song was never released as a single, however, due to the record company wanting to promote sales of the album. Some radio stations didn't chart album cuts on their playlists, so I'm surprised it got as high as it did. If they'd put a single out, it might have even gone to #1, but more likely number two or three. This was about the time that "Someday" by Mariah Carey was at number one and we all know how unstoppable Mariah was back in 1991. My favorite released track from the CD would be either "Come Back To Me" or "Love Will Never Do Without You". On the whole album, it would be "Living In A World They Didn't Make".

My favorite from the album is definitely "Lonely" which is my favorite song of all time. The arrangement on that song is amazing.

I agree that Rhythm Nation was Janet's best album. It went downhill from there for sure. The title track was my second favorite hit from the album, the only one I liked better was "Alright."

AMAZING SONG! Probably one of my favorite records of all time! Janet was able to make music that was able to have a socially conscious message and make you dance all at the same time. I really wish Janet would do POWERFUL songs like this again...especially with all that's going on right now. Sex seems to suit madonna better (that's not a bad thing because I love sexy Madonna) Socially conscious message seems to suit Janet better. I think Madonna and Janet have it all backwards that's why their careers have suffered, IMO.

i expect big changes from both I WANT changes from both. Adonis, I never realized it, but you're right! Janet and Madonna DO have it f*cked up. Political Madonna is no fun, and Sex Janet is just...not convincing.

I think it's a great song but it wouldn't be anywhere near my list of favorite Janet songs.

This song was fresh! But there were so many better tracks on that CD. Amazing: Didn't she say that they did this CD in 3 months?? I find that incredible.
"Love Will Never Do" is my JAM.

Janet did both Control and Rhythm Nation in a couple of months. She spent about 2 years working on Damita Jo. I think she should rush her albums more often.

This song is overrated because of its subject. Great lyrics and everything, but as a song it's really not that special. Probably the weakest single from the album.

My favourite Janet song, it still has a wonderfully relevant message all these years later. Also mixes in great with any other Jam & Lewis production.
