I was thinking about this last night as the local Hot AC station was playing Cake's "Let Me Go". It's the kind of song that still gets a lot of play in DC, but I haven't heard it anywhere else in ages. To further reinforce my point, the local Alternative station played "Let Me Go" about 15 minutes later. So I tried to think of some other old songs that do really well in one area of the country but not any other:
Cake - "Let Me Go" - twice in 15 minutes on 2 stations, only in DC.
Louchie Lou and Michie One "Rich Girl" - only New York and Philadelphia knew that the Gwen Stefani song was a remake.
Green Day - Basket Case - only in New York is this still a big song for CHR.
I'm sure a bunch more will come to me, but anyone else got any to add?

(I'm not even sure that they played "Brain Stew" when it was released originally, since it could have been too rockish for their format.) LOL, in point of fact, here's their top 100 of 1995. 01 Betterman – Pearl Jam 02 When I Come Around – Green Day 03 Lightening Crashes – Live 04 Corduroy - Pearl Jam 05 Like The Way I Do - Melissa Etheridge 06 All Over You - Live 07 Another Night – Real McCoy 08 Hold My Hand - Hootie & The Blowfish 09 You Oughta Know – Alanis Morissette 10 Run Around – Blues Traveler 11 Carnival - Natalie Merchant 12 Plowed - Sponge 13 Kiss From A Rose – Seal 14 Till I Hear It From You - Gin Blossoms 15 Let Her Cry - Hootie & The Blowfish 16 Good - Better Than Ezra 17 She - Green Day 18 Strong Enough – Sheryl Crow 19 Self Esteem – The Offspring 20 Always – Bon Jovi 21 Only Wanna Be With You – Hootie & The Blowfish 22 Comedown – Bush 23 Roll To Me – Del Amitri 24 I Alone – Live 25 Molly – Sponge 26 Sick Of Myself - Matthew Sweet 27 Jar – Green Day 28 100% Pure Love – Crystal Waters 29 Name – Goo Goo Dolls 30 Runaway – Real McCoy 31 December – Collective Soul 32 Hand In My Pocket – Alanis Morissette 33 I’ll Be There For You – The Rembrants 34 Buddy Holly – Weezer 35 I Knew – Dionne Farris 36 Zombie – The Cranberries 37 Take A Bow – Madonna 38 Ants Marching - Dave Matthews Band 39 Lump – The Presidents of the United States of America 40 Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me - U2 41 Total Eclipse of the Heart – Nicki French 42 Hurt – Nine Inch Nails 43 Live Forever – Oasis 44 Misery – Soul Asylum 45 Tomorrow – Silverchair 46 My Friends – Red Hot Chili Peppers 47 The Rhythm of the Night – Corona 48 Breakfast At Tiffany’s – Deep Blue Something 49 Can’t Stop Loving You – Van Halen 50 Gonna Get Away – The Offspring 51 Here Comes The Hotstepper – In Kamoze 52 What Would You Say – Dave Matthews Band 53 Missing – Everything But The Girl 54 Bullet With Butterfly Wings – Smashing Pumpkins 55 This Ain’t A Love Song – Bon Jovi 56 Time Bomb – Rancid 57 As I Lay Me Down – Sophie B. Times like these make me miss Z100. I'm almost certain that I heard Louchie Lou's "Rich Girl", but I obviously don't remember it since it would've rung a bell when I heard Gwen's version (by the way, I thought she was remaking Gilbert and Sullivan, but I guess they were as well). I remember Z100 being almost the only Pop station to play these songs: Staind - Outside (they added Lewis & Durst's version at the same time as "It's Been Awhile" but soon switched to the band's version; actually made their top 100 of 2001) Linkin Park - Papercut Linkin Park - Crawling (Both popped up around April 2002, this one being especially peculiar since it was released as a single about a year earlier) Da Buzz - Let Me Love You Lasgo - Alone

Back in 2002, my local stations were in love with "Virus of the Mind" by Heather Nova, I'm not sure if that was really taking off anywhere else or not though. My local stations were also all over T.A.T.U. when they first came out, several weeks before anyone else was.

There was a song called "Lakeshore Drive" by Aliotta (sp?), Hanes & Jeremiah that only got airplay in the Chicago area, since that was the Lakeshore Drive" they were talking about.
And the "Superbowl Shuffle" by the Chicago Bears Shufflin' Crew received airplay around the Chicago area, although I think it may have been over a wider area, since the song made it up to #41 on Billboard (of course that could be due to sales).

I remember the other version of "Rich Girl" really well. And yes, I'm from New England, so that would jive with what you're saying. They played it constantly.
If I was a rich girl, nanananananananananana Then I'd have all the money in the world, If i was a wealthy GIRLLLLLLLL
Money, Money, moneymoneymoneymoneymoney Money, Money, money can't buy love!
They played it like 9 times at my prom. In addition to Zombie Nation.

About "Rich Girl", I always sort of had the impression that a lot of Z100's big reggae songs might not be heard much in other parts of the country. Were songs like "Twice My Age", "Murder She Wrote", & "Action" big outside of NYC? Nope. All of those songs are pretty much Z100 exclusives. "Action" was a bit of a hit in other markets, but it doesn't get played anymore. I've never heard "Twice My Age" or "Murder She Wrote" anywhere besides Z100. Philly catches on to a few reggae songs, like the aforementioned "Rich Girl" and Tanto Metro and Devonte's "Everyone Falls In Love Sometimes". Oh, the days when DC had a dance-friendly CHR. *sigh* Although Hot 99.5 is spinning a dance mix of DHT more than 100 times a week right now.

It always sort of struck me as odd that there were some big Z100 hits that had videos, but that you'd NEVER see on MTV or VH1. Looking through the list, many of the dance acts are examples of this: 2 Unlimited, Real McCoy, Nicki French, and Corona. Getting back to the topic, I'm curious to know if these songs were big hits outside of NYC? (I sort of had assumed that they weren't due to their lack of video play, but now I think they must have been since they're generally considered dance classics.) Yeah, those artists all made the top 50 on CHR/Pop. Here's their chart peaks for 1995. 2 UnlimitedGet Ready For This: #29 Real McCoyAnother Night: #1 (Actually peaked in '94, but it set the Pop longevity record with 52 weeks on) Run Away: #4 Come and Get Your Love: #8 Automatic Lover: #30 Nicki FrenchTotal Eclipse of the Heart: #3 CoronaRhythm of the Night: #8 Baby Baby: #36 As far as Linkin Park went, Z100 has done some weird stuff like that at times. It's almost like once an artist "proves" themselves, Z100 feels bad and goes back and spins all their older stuff that they ignored. "Papercut" was also released as a single and had a music video (I saw it in Italy in the summer of 2001)--so, it was probably a Europe-only release. Z100 felt that it was safe for them to play "Papercut" and "Crawling" once "In The End" proved that Linkin Park could have a big pop hit. The same was probably true of Staind. Yeah, one thing I loved about Z100 was that they didn't seem afraid to take a chance on some artists' stuff. I was kinda pulling for "Outside" and "Papercut" to catch on nationally on Pop, but it was still cool to see them just play those songs. Usually only maybe a very-small-market or independent station might try to do something like that. It doesn't surprise me to hear that "Alone" & "Let Me Love You" weren't big hits outside of the New York area. For some reason, NYC seems far more dance-friendly, even today, than other markets. Narcotic Thrust and Mynt are recent examples of Z100 hits that were basically ignored by pop stations in other markets. Does anyone else have any info on other big late 90's/early 00's Z100 dance hits? Deborah Cox' success, other than maybe "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here", which MTV actually played, always struck me as being local. How about songs like Ultra Nate's "Free", "Above The Clouds" by Amber, "I'll Fly With You", or Reina's "No One's Gonna Change You"? All were HUGE on Z100, but the artists are unknown by the general public and the videos never aired. Another reason I loved Z100 was the great dance songs (and some of the reggae songs too) they played that nobody else played. I remember the dance trend on Pop starting to emerge in 2001 and then explode in 2002 with Dan Bedingfield, DJ Sammy and Dirty Vegas, and I couldn't help but think that Z100 really played a critical role in that. When the trend faded in 2003, Z100 still plugged along with the dance music, which I have to commend them for. It seems there's usually at least one "big" dance song on the station at any given time. Unfortunately, 2003 was also the time I moved to Seattle, and KBKS doesn't play dance music (aside from Saturday nights which most stations do anyway), unless it breaks nationally, so I really hate that I'm missing out on some of the songs their playing now. Regarding your question, Deborah Cox hit #28 in '96 with "Who Do U Love", and "I'll Fly With You" hit #34.

When I first started listening to radio it was in Albany, NY - the CHR station there was, and still is WFLY 92.3
I remember they used to play the heck out of this song "In Paradise" by Laissez Faire. In 1991-1992. And they had it on recurrent for probably two more years, despite the song not cracking the top 50 on CHR. They even played a follow up track for a while, "To Be In Your Arms" which never charted.
I also remember they played "Bad Bad Boys" by Midi Maxi and Efti in 1992 or 93 to the point of overkill. It peaked at #98 on Billboard's Hot 100. I own the single :)

Le Click - Call Me Sade - By Your Side I've only been to Miami twice in my life, but these two songs make me instantly think of it. Sade was on a few other stations, but Y100 was its biggest supporter. "Call Me" was a hit in other markets, such as DC and Philly, but both Power and Y100 were giving it huge spins, even as a year-old recurrent.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Lara Fabian's "I Will Love Again" in the NY area.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Lara Fabian's "I Will Love Again" in the NY area. I was going to mention that, but I thought it was big nationally. Then again, the Thunderpuss Radio Edit was all over NY radio in 2000. Also, Mis-Teeq's "Scandalous", though a national hit, was really big in the DC area last summer on WIHT. It seriously got airplay from June through October. Can you affirm that, Slinky?

I do remember Hot playing it a lot, but I don't remember how long they kept it in rotation. It didn't jump out at me because it was also a national hit.

CHR station Power 92 was playing "Possession" by Sarah McLachlan back in 1994. It didn't hit the Hot AC chart for another 3 years.

For Q102, I'd say:
-"Let's Get Married" (Q102 played the HELL out of this song. Came out in 2000, but you mainly heard it EVERYDAY from like 2002 - early 2005. I haven't heard the song in a while, thank GOD).
-Rockell "In A Dream" (I heard a Q102 recording from 1999, not too long ago, and this song was on it. So, it wasn't like they started playing it in like 2002 or something.)
-"Sandstorm" (Not sure how well this did nationally, but Q102 played the heck out of this one, too).
-"Rich Gril" (This used to be on ALL THE TIME until Gwen's came out, and then they stopped playing it. :( )

I remember Slightly Stoopid getting lots of airplay on 91X in San Diego (where they're from). CHR KHTS also started playing it and was the only CHR station playing their song "Sweet Honey". I also remember 91X banging the heck out of "A Praise Chorus" by Jimmy Eat World in the summer of 2003.

WIOG played "Picture" for a couple of months before it even came near the chart. I think they started playing it in August of 2002.
They were pretty early on "Listen to Your Heart" last year, too. I remember hearing it before it was even near the chart.

What about WLS AM 890 playing The Kind's "I've Got You"?
The Kind was a local Chicago band.

Victoria Beckham - Not Such An Innocent Girl In the NYC area: "Action," Terror Fabulous "One More Night," Amber "The Jock Jam," Various Artists "Do You Miss Me," Jocelyn Enriquez "In A Dream," Rockell "Can't We Try," Rockell/Collage "Do It Again," Razor-N-Guido "Purest of Pain," Son By Four "Kernkraft 400," Zombie Nation "I'll Fly With You," Gigi D'Agostino "Everyone Falls In Love," Tanto Metro/Devonte "No One's Gonna Change You," Reina "Alone," Lasgo "Never," The Roc Project "Something Happened...," Deborah Cox All those got a lot of airplay here in the SF bay area when they first came out. However, for "In A Dream" it was the original version by Jossette. I'm surprised no one mentioned Lara Fabian's "I Will Love Again" in the NY area. That got plenty of play in the SF area also. Z95.7 played the radio mix most of the time, but the majority of its play came from the remixes during the mixshows. San Francisco: Voice V/One Vo1ce - When U Think About Me (1999) Angelina - Bailando (1999) Any of the Voice V/One Vo1ce singles including that one and "All Day, All Nite" were pretty huge in SF. Most of Angelina's singles except for "Release Me" (which got a lot of national attention) were pretty massive in SF too. Some of the places where Freestyle music was pretty popular like Florida and stuff played her music too.

there was a band called Rhythm Syndicate back in the late 1980s and all of their hits were huge in CT because they were from Connecticut. Especially P.A.S.S.I.O.N , and Hey Donna (which was even bigger hit) Our pop stations played them really heavily

As for Atlanta's urban stations, mainly WVEE, they jumped on these when they were non-singles/album tracks:
Lloyd f/ Lil' Wayne - "You" (2006)| The original version which featured an underground rapper named Tango Redd received airplay in late spring of 2006. It was dropped in favor of the Lil' Wayne version in the early summer.
Alicia Keys f/ Tony! Toni! Tone! - "Diary" (2004)| Received airplay as an album track shortly after DOAK dropped and stayed in moderate to heavy rotation until it was officially released.
Mary J. Blige - "Never Been" (2002)| This was from No More Drama and the Brown Sugar soundtrack. It was in moderate rotation in the fall. I don't think it appeared on the Billboard R&B chart.
Jadakiss f/ Mariah Carey - "U Make Me Wanna" (2004)| Played constantly during that summer. The spins died down by the time it was released.
Nelly - "N Dey Say" (2004) | In rotation for a few weeks after Sweat/Suit dropped. Defunct rhythmic station 95.5 The Beat played it in the winter of 2004-05.
Outkast - "Prototype" and "Roses" (2003) | They were only in rotation for a few months after Speakerboxx/The Love Below hit the shelves. "Roses" reappeared in the spring/summer of 2004. I believe I heard "Prototype" on the defunct 97.1 Jamz a few months later.
Akon - "Bonanza (Belly Dancer)" (2003) | It debuted on WHTA a year before "Locked Up" took off.
Ciara f/ Ludacris - "Oh" (2004) | It was added along with "1,2 Step". Those two were inescapable then.
ETA: Fantasia - "Free Yourself" (2004) | See Alicia Keys' "Diary".
I could go on. There were plenty of songs from then-local acts (i.e. Lil' Jon & The Eastside Boyz, Gucci Mane, Dem Franchise Boyz) that had radio support 3-6 months before they received major national attention.

In the NYC area: "I Turn To You," Melanie C "Let Me Love You," Da Buzz "I'll Fly With You," Gigi D'Agostino "Everyone Falls In Love," Tanto Metro/Devonte "Give It To Her," Tanto Metro/Devonte "No One's Gonna Change You," Reina "Alone," Lasgo Wow, this takes me back! Also from that era in NYC: "L'Italiano (DJ Serge Mix)," Sicilian Assassins "Dat Sexy Body," Sasha "Tempted To Touch," Rupee "Let's Get It On," Lucas Prata In the early 00's it seemed there were two or three big local-only dance or reggae/soca hits at any given time. These days it rarely, if ever, happens. Part of the reason is the country in general is more open to dance music so many of the would-be locals are now nationwide. On the other hand, KTU used too break these songs (and they'd cross over to Z100 and sometimes beyond) but since that station has gone the way of ClearChannel, they're usually the last station in the city to add major hits now. I've noticed 92.3NOW attempts to add major European dance hits ahead of the Pop curve, but usually the rotation is too minor to qualify as a "local hit." ETA: That said, some songs that were moderate nationwide hits in recent years like "Take Over Control" by Afrojack and "Hello" by Martin Solveig were basically major in the NYC area. Oh, and Edward Maya's "Stereo Love" felt like the most played song on radio for an entire year.

KROQ's biggest examples have to include: Dramarama - Anything, Anything Slightly Stoopid - 2AM Every Sublime single ever They also played a whole bunch of album tracks I don't have time to mention. They typically played whatever they wanted from an album before an official single was released, and then they would start playing that.
