This song brings back memories of middle school. Well, any song from this group, brings back memories. It was when Ace of Base was really hot on the radio that I first started paying attention to music. My guy friends at the time were probably closet Ace of Base listeners, but I had there cassette (haha) .. then their CD.

I used to love this song. They used to play it sooo much on the radio stations. I miss Ace Of Base.

This is still one of my very favorite songs. I didn't listen to the radio when this came out, so I didn't get burnt out on it like most people. I remember freshman year dances when they would play this, my friends and I would lose it. Always brings a smile to my face. There was a good Gabriel & Dresden bootleg mix of this about 2 years back.
I heard AOB is coming out with new material soon. Their last album was pretty good, especially Unspeakable.
Peace, Ben

Good song. It hit #1, dropped to #2, and returned to #1. I'm not sure the last time that's happened prior to 1994. But I don't think Casey did a story on it when that happened. Rick Dees apparently had some sort of special the week that happened.

I just found the import single for $3.50. The Ultimix version on there is great. More "The Sign" is better than less "The Sign"

Good song. It hit #1, dropped to #2, and returned to #1. I'm not sure the last time that's happened prior to 1994. It only happened twice on the R&R charts. Both times were back in the mid-70s and involved songs by Elton John. First, in April, 1974, Elton topped the chart with "Bennie & The Jets", dropped back to #2 while Blue Swede had a week at the top with "Hooked On A Feeling" (How could BJ Thomas approve of that? :o), then Elton moved back to the top for a second non-consecutive week (The year end chart pack indicates that "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song" by Jim Croce was at #1 that week, which is incorrect, as that song peaked at #9) Anyway, exactly a year later, Elton spent five weeks on top with "Philadelphia Freedom", fell out of number one to let Tony Orlando & Dawn have a week at the top with "He Don't Love You (Like I Love You)", then made an encore appearance at the top for one more week. Actually, as I related in another thread, the special happened the week before, then Rick used the April 15 chart for the April 30 show (the week Ace Of Base returned to the chart on CT40) and the next week, used the April 29 chart. He was apparently trying to avoid that April 22 chart at all costs. Seems he had something against songs returning to the top of the chart. Everytime someone called in and asked if a song had ever hit number one, dropped out, then returned to number one, he said no, even though this was not correct. He used Billboard info for all charts before 1983 and several songs had done this. Heck, I'm surprised that he didn't do a special, or artificially place a different song at the top the week Savage Garden rebounded to number one with "Truly Madly Deeply".

I love this song. :)
I hated the Shell commercial that used it, though (the one that had the dog singing "The Thrill Is Gone", and then all these birds start singing "The Sign"... wtf does that have to do with gasoline??).

There was some commercial for some gym or fitness center on TV that used the intro beats of the song. They looped it so many times that you're like, "sing dammit! I can't wait!" i loved the Stephanie Tanner cover! :o) I always remembered that episode. It was so funny when the girls are attempting to perform the song during some show in front of an audience and they mess up. But if that happened for real, it would be really sad. JAM! This was every 5th grader's fav song back when my sis was in 5th grade! I felt hella cool listening to it, cuz I was only in 1st grade. LOL! I was the same way with Mariah Carey's "Dreamlover" when that came out. All the 6th graders at that time would bang the hell out of that song during lunch and recess. Then after school, I would put on my tape of Music Box and then just rock out!

I think this was the first song to spend 29 weeks in the Top 40.

Yeah, but that was during the PPW era. Before then, the longevity record belonged to "Love Will Keep Us Together" by the Captain & Tennille, which spent 22 weeks in the Top 40 back in 1975. That was for a single chart run. The record for a combined chart run before 1994 was "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen, which came close to tying the Captain & Tennille record by spending 21 weeks on the chart in 1976. Then, with the helps of the box office smash "Wayne's World", the song had another run on the chart, spending nine more weeks on, pushing the songs' cumulative total number of weeks to an even 30.
I liked this song and, despite gross overplay, I never got tired of the song. Which is more than I can say for the grossly overplayed - wait, I promised myself I'd lay off that song about farm animal waste lying beside something George Washington had a natural obsession for...

This is such a great song. Doesn't it have the record for most weeks #1 at pop?

"The Sign" was my #1 favorite song of '94, and also ranked at #1 for the 1990s on my personal chart.
While it's still a great song, it just became way too overplayed. Looking back, there are a few other less-played songs from the '90s that I now like a little better.

I always remember watching "Full House" where Stephanie (a complete 'Jan') made a band, sang this song, and everything went to hell because she refused to have help from Uncle Jesse.
I also remember not being cool if you did not like this song in middle school, as well as the hot trend in having deep voiced\scary German voiced guy who said (right back where you belong), who sounded just like the scary deep voiced\scary German guy from Real McCoy (just another night, along in my dweeem).

This song is still a classic . It has the record with the most weeks on the mainstream top 40 to date (14 consecutive weeks).
