This was my favorite song from 1983-84. I hear it once in awhile on AT20. :) It was far superior to "Space Oddity."

I loved this Peter Schilling song too... I used to think the title was "Earth Below Us".

I liked it at the time, but now I find the idea of writing a sequel to someone else's song rather hideous.
It also sounds far more dated today than David Bowie's 1969 tribute to Major Tom.

I like this song. A few years ago, I worked with a guy named Peter Schilling. Spelled exactly the same way. For fun, I asked him about his big pop hit. He laughed and knew what I was talking about. He said that several people came up to him and asked him about being a big rock star. He got fired when he got into a fist-fight at work.

The full length video is up at VH1 if you can get it to work.

Reminds me of the 6th grade. :) Me too. Not that it's a good thing, though ;) If I hadn't listened to the countdown shows back then, I probably would have thought it was called "Earth Below Us", like Aaron did. A logical mistake. As for my opinion of the song, it's good for a listen every now and again, but at the time, I thought it was a tad bit overplayed.

I liked it at the time, but now I find the idea of writing a sequel to someone else's song rather hideous. That's not exactly what happened though, was it? I may be getting my memories mixed up, but I think this song was written for a film sequel to '2001: A Space Odyssey'. Seems like it was called '2010'. Point is, I think this was commissioned, not inspired. But I think your point holds. 2010 was a pathetic homage to the original 2001, and this song compares similarly to the Bowie tune. Yuk!

2010 was a pathetic homage to the original 2001... Well, 2010 was the sequel to 2001: A Space Odyssey. I mean, they were both written by Arthur C. Clarke (as were 2061 and 3001; I haven't read any of them for the record). It wasn't like some writer/director took it upon himself to squeeze a franchise out of the original movie. (OK, not exactly, anyway)

I heard it a lot when I was out in San Diego. It was also the first time I ever remember hearing it. I've heard it on Jack FM lately and I think it's pretty cool.

It's alright, but "Space Oddity" blows it away.

Have you heard the German version? It's pretty good. A couple weekends ago on "American Top 40 - The 80s" during the first optional segment, they played an English-German hybrid that was the in the same style as "99 Luftballons/99 Red Balloons" that American Top 40 played a couple of times in 1984. The verses would alternate between each language.

Great 80s song! One of many dealing with space, robots, etc :) It's my favorite from Peter, followed by Different Story. As a curiosity, in the 90s it served as 'inspiration' to a big hit by a Peruvian Cumbia teenage group. That version was sort of a guilty pleasure for some (and an abomination for others ): youtu.be/fmxUPRBYlbA

Well that Spanish version was...different.
The best cover of this is by Shiny Toy Guns, and I believe it was used in a car commercial a few years back
