Definitely one of the most bizarre songs I've ever heard. The synthesizer used in the song (known as a "moog") makes a lot of blips, supposedly supposed to represent popcorn popping in time to the music. I heard it on Sunny 101.5's "Lunchtime 70s" yesterday and I was like, "Whoa, I'd almost forgotten about this song!" Any of you ever heard this odd song? I think it went Top Ten in the spring or summer of 1972.

Extremely odd, goofy instrumental.
Apparently their followup single "Lobster Tail" never charted. ;)

Funny song. Not too long ago I heard a techno remix of this.

I think the guy named Aphex Twin does a remix of this. This is too annoying for me.

Strange, bizarre, lots of keyboard and moog activity. Makes you think of the movie theatres that served them.

Love it! I have it on a 70's compilation CD. The first time I heard it was on the Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 in the summer of 1996. He did a really great instrumental montage. Can't remember if it was for "Mission: Impossible" or "Children." Anyway, some of the other songs in that montage were: Frankenstein Miami Vice Exorcist The Stripper Star Wars Rick said, "Remember 'Popcorn' by Hot Butter? I don't."

Kinda reminds me of the summer of 1998. I was working at an Italian restaurant and this was one of the songs on the Muzak that got played a lot. :)

It was so funny, because I had heard that song on Windy 100 (WNND in Chicago) Saturday night oldies show a few months before. I always thought this was a theme for a radio show or something; I had no idea it was a real song, let alone one that charted in the Top Ten!

Interesting song. When I was in 2nd grade, occasionally for P.E., we did all these dances, and one of the dances we had to do was to this song. It was a complete, repetitive, line dancing routine. Gosh, if I ever had to do that again!

I'm hoping this song will turn up on AT10 in the near future. It may just happen if instrumetal songs are featured in the spotlight. There have been a lot of obscure songs played this year.

I heard this for the first time on AT40 (the Flashback) that they play on XM radio. It was top ten in 1972.

I heard that "Popcorn" was the 1st all-synthesized song to chart in the top 10. It was really ahead of its time.

Absolute classic! Even before Kraftwerk, this was probably the first example of how electronic music could reach a wide audience and not lose one bit of edge for that. This and Walter Carlos's soundtrack to A Clockwork Orange ended up being more influential and door-opening than they ever thought possible.

Casey Kasem on AT40 once got the title and song reversed mentioned.

Grand-grand-grand father of EDM.
I didn't know that this is obscure. I've known this since I was a kid, I thought that this and Axel F were two most famous instrumental songs ever. I also used to confuse these two songs a lot.
Also I didn't know this song was actually a cover lmao

Not sure how I feel about this. It's not something I will add to my library or playlist. But seeing that video with the dancing gives me laughs. I think this was in a scene in a movie that I can't recall. It's the one that has Michael Fassbender (Young Magneto from X-Men) in it.
