This was a Top 10 hit from Prince's phenomenal Sign O The Times album. Prince is one of those artists who has so many big hits that sometimes even his big hits become overshadowed. I feel like this song is kind of forgotten among all his classics. It's got a really original concept for a guy to sing which is something Prince never struggled with.

Classic. A flawlessly crafted song and one of his best singles. It also happens to be from the best album of all time as far as I'm concerned.

I like this song... the flipside "Hot Thing" is smoking though.

All those who prefer Jordan Knight's version should be banned from posting on music boards (or talk about music) till the end of their days. Hey, what can I say? It's a proof of why Prince was, in his day, an undeniable genius. The way he seemed to cross and destroy musical barriers in such an inventive and, at the same time, accessible style was truly unique and original. For he is one of the few people for whom the word "original" really suits. And the fact that this - and most of his other songs from that era - still sound fresh and good to the ear is a better testament to it than anything else.

I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man reached #10 in 1988 and was played by Don Imus this morning on his radio show

I liked hate this song. It's highly over underrated. This coming from a guy who ADORES pretty much everything Prince has done. Protegés included.

I liked hate this song. It's highly over underrated. This coming from a guy who ADORES pretty much everything Prince has done. Protegés included. I hate people that do this. If you're going to quote someone else, do NOT altered their post. It's not funny, nor cute. It's tacky. "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man" is Prince's best song! It's simply smashing. Jordan Knight's cover... VOMIT! Talk about completely missing the point! If Prince's version is cheesy, what the heck is Jordan's version? If you look up the definition of cheesy in the dictionary, a picture of Jordan Knight will be next to it. :o

One of my favorite Prince singles. Timeless and durable. He had a way of mixing so many things into one, flawlessly, from genres to moods, and so on.
I prefer the album cut, but he always delivers a vibe live:
