Released from the "Mo Money" soundtrack, Luther Vandross's "The Best Things In Life Are Free" became his biggest CHR/Pop hit in the summer of 1992. The album version was really bad, but it had a great remix called the CJ Mackintosh remix which actually made this song rank up there with my favorites by both artists. That version is responsible for most of this song's airplay now. Dave Morales also did a remix, but that one really pales in comparison to the Mackintosh mix. You can download that one here: www.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=BA958A35E5FC086FED4E8AAF21185024Hot 100: #10 Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks: #1 Hot Dance Music/Club Play: #3 CHR/Pop: #2

I liked it. Biggest hit in the UK for both of them. For Janet it's her joint biggest, this and 'That's The Way Love Goes' peaked at #2.

I was not a big fan of it and I thought the soundtrack as a whole was a disappointment. Luther and Janet just made up a strange duet.
There were a lot of good soundtracks that came out during that time... New Jack City, Above The Rim, Poetic Justice, Higher Learning, Boyz In The Hood, etc. I guess I was expecting a little more.
The movie was entertaining.

I like the album version better too.
The rap break by BBD and Ralph Tresvant is smokin'!

Marginal at best. But if I'm not mistaken, this may have been Janet's only Top 40 hit in 1992, keeping her longevity streak alive til 2002.

I like the radio remix (which one is it??) better, the one that was played mostly here in the States. Now this mix at the time was hard to find at the time unless of course you were a DJ.

Janet showed she could hang with the best singers with this song! She really showed she has some nice pipes on this song. They both did really well. This was such a good song to dance to! Janet and Luther seem like an odd combination but it really worked well on this track!

It expired. I used to love this song. Ralph Trasvent and BBD added flavor to the song.

It was #16 on the 9/6/1992 edition of Shadoe Stevens' AT40.

I loved this one! There was a CJ Mcintoch mix of this that was really hot. And I liked what K Klass did with their remix...

CJ's mix was lush and romantic - totally transformed the song.

This is just terrible. How the hell did it reach #2 on CHR/Pop?

This is just terrible. How the hell did it reach #2 on CHR/Pop? Because the remixes, as already stated, were amazing. They sent out a promo CD with nine remixed versions on it. I hate the original, but love the remixes.

It's cute and all, goes along alright with Janet's light fare. I don't care much for BBD and Tresvant's parts, though.

I can only find the full length version of the CJ Mackintosh remix on YouTube, not the radio edit. Luther's greatest hits that focused on his 90s material included the Morales/Knuckles remix of the song instead of the album version.

I thought that would go to #1, but it didn't, despite entering the Billboard Radio Monitor chart at #13 at the time the old AT40 then hosted by Shadoe Stevens was using that chart as its source.

wasn't the mix used in the video (the Classic 7" mix done by Morales/Frankie Knuckles ) the popular version in the U.S.?

wasn't the mix used in the video (the Classic 7" mix) was the popular version? video: I think it varied by radio format and country. This was a hit in the UK twice. The K Klass remix went to #7 in December 1995.

Never heard that mix ^ but it's up to par with the ones from the '92 release. The remixes really saved this song because the album/soundtrack version was nothing to call home about.
