Quite a departure from Mr. Manilow's usually slow, cheesy love songs. This was an upbeat, big-band reminiscent song that was released a little too soon after "Even Now". This especially hurt the latter's chart performance on the CHR chart, especially since it was his typical slow music. As soon as "Copacabana" was released, the pop audience enjoyed the change and the song sailed into the Top Ten.
There are two different versions of this song - the single version and the album version (the 45 I have has both of them). I prefer the single because the album version has a bunch of meaningless ad lib after the second chorus and before the last verse (Copa-Copacabana/Talking Havana/have a banana) It's like, "HUH??"
Anyway, I think it's a pretty decent song. How about you?

I love it. :)
It's one of those songs that nobody wants to admit to liking though, for fear of being made fun of (but then I guess that applies to all Barry Manilow songs).

It's entertaining. Not a great song, but I still love hearing it.

I consider myself to be a good music buff, but I never became familiar with this song until I first heard it in October 1997. I remember I was driving my '75 Gran Torino Wagon with 200,000 miles on it, and this song came on. I listened to it in its entirety, but was completely baffled about the identity. I knew it obviously wasn't a new song, but it took me a bit to figure out the artist. I didn't even think of Barry Manilow because as Ulij20 mentioned, it wasn't a sappy love song.
I came across the '45 a few weeks later. Like Ulij20, I don't care for the "B" side extended version, because of the meaningless mambo jambo.
I don't know about the R&R chart run, but the Billboard Top 40 run was rather short. 22-17-15-13-12-8-8-14-24.

Reminds me of a friend of mine who used to like to do karaoke and sing this song.
My favorite Barry Manilow song is "Daybreak."

I have to admit that song is sappy, but more feel-good if you're into that kind of thing. Other than that it's a good song.

At the Copa Copacabana, the hottest club up in Alaska. Actually is wasn't Alaska it was Havana - Here's the beginning lyrics - a good classic by Barry Manilow. I hear it occasionally on Music Of Your Life. Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl With yellow feathers in her hair and a dress cut down to there She would merengue and do the cha-cha But while she tried to be a star, Tony always tended bar Across the crowded floor, he worked from 8 til 4 They were young and they had each other Who could ask for more? At the Copa (CO!), Copacabana (Copacabana)The hottest spot north of Havana (here)At the Copa (CO!), Copacabana Music and passion were always in fashion At the Copa....they fell in love.

...the single version and the album version (the 45 I have has both of them). I have this 45 single too, and I think it was the 1st one Arista released with the black label with the blue logo. At least as far as I know, prior to this, Arista's singles were a plain white label with the blue on top. I prefer longer mix because it has the conga break in the middle which at the time was pretty cool. I did, as a kid growing up, like a lot of Barry's songs. "Mandy" entered AT40 right around time I turned 11 and all his major hits were during my AT40 listening period 74-80 or so. I liked a lot of his songs growing up, but today, the only song of his that I can listen to (and I can play it endlessly so that's a good thing) is "Could It Be Magic." I don't know what it is about that song, I just think it is so much better than anything he had ever done, and he really does have a solid body of work. I really think this is (easily) his best vocal work. He doesn't have a great voice, and he doesn't write the songs. But this song, he sounds awesome when he stretches his voice, especially the last 2 minutes or so when he kinda screams "baby i want you!" not a great voice to be sure, but some of my favorite rock vocalists are Springsteen, Mark Knopfler, Don Henley and Graham Parker. None are beautiful voices, but they all sound gruffy with some feeling in em, and I think Barry fits this group with this song at least. just MHO.

This song has become sort of an ironic anthem for the hipster crowd. Meaning? It's one of those songs that gets played at those arty-like kind of club parties, where the definition of what's cool or not to like is a bit blurred. Those places where Björk, Franz Ferdinand or Carl Craig co-exist in peace and harmony with Barry Manilow, Babrbra Streisand or The Village People, because, you see, we're being "ironic". I think you guys get my point. ;) I am actually a fan of some of those hang-outs.

Manilow's music is so-so. His concerts are AWFUL. Older females love him, but most guys my age aren't into his style all that much.
Anyway, I have to admit that "Copa" is probably his best song. The remix version is the best! Great disco beat.

There are quite a few artists whose music I thought was very uncool when I was a kid but who I've since come to like. Barry Manilow isn't one of them. I detest this.

I remember this one from June, 1978. This is a disco record, which I like. I don't care for most of Barry Manilow's music, but this one I like.

This is one of those songs that is a classic because so many know it even if they don't like it.

One of my father's favourite songs. Possibly as a result of him playing it so much, I now hate it.

They played this at a party I was at over the summer. I was buzzed and loved every minute of this song.
