I love this song now, didn't like it much when it first came out. The first time I saw the video, I thought she was a man.

I can't believe 'Baby Can I Hold You' and to a lesser extent 'Talking 'Bout A Revolution' were never hits....

I can't believe 'Baby Can I Hold You' and to a lesser extent 'Talking 'Bout A Revolution' were never hits.... Let's not forget her late 1989 hit "Crossroads" which came and went really fast, or so it seems.

I really enjoyed this song. It was later sampled in "Dreams" by Gabrielle.

I never liked "Fast Car" but did like "Give Me One Reason." It was also sampled in the big hit by Nice 'N Smooth, "Sometimes I Rhyme Slow" in 1991.

Great song from a fantastic album.
But does anyone else think of Kim Wayans from In Living Color when they hear it?

I love this song! A classic. ^ And yes... I do. I also think that that girl had really big feet during that skit.

Great song, this made her huge back then. Really? I though Give Me One Reason was her big "claim to fame" and that came 8 years later. Anyways, I really like this song a lot. In fact, her later material is also very good. "Telling Stories..." deserved to be a multi-format SMASH hit for her, but alas...

In February 1989, Tracy took home 3 Grammy Awards for Best New Artist, Best Vocal Performance - Female ("Fast Car"), and Best Contemporary Folk Recording (Tracy Chapman) and was nominated for Album of the Year (Tracy Chapman), Record of the Year and Song of the Year (songwriter) ("Fast Car"). Her debut album sold 6 million copies in the US (10 million worldwide). -- Rock On The Net

it's such a fascinating song. I love Tracy to pieces, that song's one of the reasons.

I like this song but there's something about her voice that depresses me

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I hate this song! My local 80's station plays it a lot, and I have to turn the station whenever it comes on. It's very dull and depressing.

It peaked at #4 on the AC chart as mentioned on the US Music Survey.

This still gets quite a bit of play on the local AC station here. I didn't think it would've done nearly as well as it did.

Very touching and well-written song about the cycle of poverty and abuse. It almost brought me to tears the first few times I heard it.
