I love this now. It used to NOT be one of my favorites at all, now it's a song I can play on repeat. Crazy how that happens.

"Rhythm Nation" is one of the most solid pop albums of all times as evidenced by it's incredible chart record. This time period was really the high point in quiet storm ballads for Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and they definitely gave Janet three amazing ones for her "Rhythm Nation" album. I definitely prefer the ballad that preceded "Come Back To Me" on the album though, "Lonely". That one is my favorite Janet song of all time. Completely agree. Sorry to bump this thread, but I'm totally obsessed with "Come Back To Me" - and "Lonely", which is also my favorite Janet song of all time - these days. Wish she would do another song in this Quiet Storm style. I doubt she'd top those two, though.

This is my favorite Janet song, period. I never get tired of listening to it.
My favorite version is the Abandoned Heart Mix. Breathtaking.

One of Janet's best ballads. While I wouldn't want a rehash, I wish she'd make ballads similar to this appeal again.

^Really? I couldn't get into it like some of the better ballads. Her delivery just seemed kinda low-key overall, though there were shades of old-school Janet (such as when she sang, "I'll do anything you want..."), but I want full-on and not just shades. :) Plus, it sounded like she was mumbling more than usual at some points.

She didn't mumble on 'Nothing', IMO.

I'd liken "Every Time" to "Again" more than "Nothing."
MikeC, the song as a whole isn't mumbles, just certain parts (to me).
I love the string arrangement on "Come Back to Me."

She didn't mumble on 'Nothing', IMO. I agree. I thought it was a stronger vocal than most of her albums post Damita Jo.

Yeah, I know exactly what "version" talking about. I'm surprised it is not even on any of her collections. The mix you're referring to is the "LP Version" which has little flavour in my honest opinion. Even one of the most popular "elevator" music providers Muzak stopped playing the LP mix and went on to the more classy single version. The name of the single version is "Beggin' You" mix. The radio edit I believe is 4:47 in length. If the single version is the "Beggin' You" mix, then does that essentially make the album version the "Abandoned Heart" mix? I've not heard the Rhythm Nation album to know for sure. Of the versions/loaded "videos" of this song I've been able to find on YouTube that are not live performances or somebody else's covers, the "Abandoned Heart" mix is the only one that sounds anything different from the others. All the others sound like the single version. I was trying to find both versions today. The "slower" Abandoned Heart mix sounds like what was played on the 8/4/90 episode of AT40. Maybe that's what they went with its first few weeks out, I have no idea. (It was immediately followed by a LDD that week, though.)

Libra - you should listen to Rhythm Nation 1814. Immediately, if not sooner. :)

ADORE the entire RN1814 project. Very nostalgic for me. I was in high school - yes, high school - when this was out and will always be a coming of age for me.

I can honestly say, no joke, I have listened to those layered background vocals that open the album version to CBTM over 10,000 times. This used to be my favorite Janet song as a child and I would listen specifically for those beginning vocals. Typing this right now just give me chills.
I also like the end of the song when she's singng "my heart won't let you go" and the background oooh ooohs can be heard. love CBTM.

Hands down one one of my favorite Janet songs. It's so lush and melancholic. The production, the vocals, the lyric.... perfection.
