What a great song! I heard this for the first time a couple of days ago and I'm kind of addicted. I liked this one instantly for its bad-ass guitar riff and great vocal harmonies. It's been on repeat for a while. Apparently, this was the first substantial US hit for the Doobie Brothers when it hit #11 on the Hot 100 in 1972. It made it to #29 in the UK in 1974. So, it was not really a massive hit... That really surprises me, because I honestly think it's such a killer record. The most shocking thing about this group is it featured Michael McDonald. The guy ended up making blue-eyed soul and AC records in the 1980s, a sound that is 180 degrees away from songs like "Listen To The Music." Anyone else familiar with this tune?

Michael McDonald didn't join the band until 1975, so he wasn't in this lineup. Most of his stuff with the Doobies' is similar to his solo stuff ("Minute by Minute", "What A Fool Believes")
This song is pretty good, but they have better.

^^ I agree , I'm not that familiar with this band but I think they've done some better songs than this.

Yeah, who was lead singer of Doobie Brothers in 1972? I believe it was Tom Johnston, but I think Patrick Simmons sang lead on a few of their songs.

Thanks for the heads-up. That kind of makes more sense... But I gotta say that I think the earlier songs are the better ones, now that I've had a chance to listen to a fair bit of their material...

The Doobie Brothers pre-Michael McDonald had much better music. I do like this one, but my favorite Doobie song from that era is "China Grove".

This is one of my favorite songs from the early-70s.
It has such an easy, catchy melody - not too hard, not too soft. A good road trip song IMO. Great guitar playing, and good vocals.

Speaking of China Grove, I remember hearing a 'King Biscuit Flour Hour' concert where the Michael McDonald led group performed the song live. Best thing MM ever did, and a few years later I found a copy of that performance. Unfortunately, like other one-time radio programs such as weekly countdown shows, it was pressed into low-quality vinyl. After a number of listens, the record began to rapidly degrade.

This is pretty good, but I love "What a Fool Believes" (so I guess I stand in the minority so far ).

This is pretty good, but I love "What a Fool Believes" (so I guess I stand in the minority so far ). I did too when it was new in '79, but it became way way way way way way too overplayed - especially on AC stations well into the '80s. "Listen to the Music" is one of those catchy, jangly-guitar tunes with a great melody that I just don't get tired of. "Black Water" was another good one.
