ULTRA '92 SMASH!! #1 Adult Contemporary #1 The Billboard Hot 100 #1 Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks I love it!! It brings me back to my kindergarten graduation in 1993, where an 8th grader sang the song all off-key. I really liked the lyrics, and I used to always think about what if the sun really did go around the moon! And from that point on, I always saved the best part of dinner "for last." You may remember this from Alexandra Bachelier's crackin' American Idol semi-finalist performance in Season 1. She really did it justice. She was robbed of a place in the Top 10.

For awhile, this song looked to be a sure-fire bet for the number one song of 1992 (on the R&R chart), but then, a movie called Boomerang spawned a huge hit, I believe it was called "End Of The Road" by, um, Boyz II Men, was it? I think so - something like that... ;)
Anyway, that song won the title of #1 song of 1992 by a landslide (618 (or so) points, versus the 489 point total of "Save The Best For Last". In fact, the song was almost pushed down to #3 by "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough" by Patty Smyth featuring Don Henley, which also accumulated 489 points, but Vanessa Willams got the benefit of the tie since she spent more weeks at #1 (4) than Patty and Don (3).
This song also holds the record of the biggest drop from #2. Talk about an erratic fall. First of all, the song dropped to #2 and then held there for another week, and then it plummeted to 16! I'd swear that there was some sort of computer error the week it held at number two, because songs that do that after falling out of #1 were almost unheard of back then, as was its fall to 16 the next week. But, short of contacting the Top 40 editor from 1992, we'll probably never know what the deal was.
Anyway, my opinion on the song - very good, one of 1992's best, as were the other two songs mentioned above. 1992 was a pretty good year in music.

Her biggest hit to date is "Where Do We Go From Here". :)

I always found myself teetering on the verge of liking and hating this song at the same time. On one hand, it had a really beautiful melody, but on the other, the lyrics were such an absolute cheese-fest...aig! Vanessa Williams singing it didn't help much.

Alexandra Bachelier really did this song justice! I thought she was better than Vanessa. Alex B was the best for me. A lot of people didn't vote for her because they were jeaous.

I like it but I would place several Vanessa Williams songs ahead of this one, namely "Dreaming," "The Right Stuff," and "Running Back To You" just to name a few.

I absolutely loved this song when it came out but got really sick of it when it got waaaaay overplayed on the radio. Had a quick rise and a very quick fall. When I hear it now, I realize what a classic song it is.
March 14, 1992
01 02 I'm Too Sexy - Right Said Fred 02 03 Save The Best For Last - Vanessa Williams 03 01 A Deeper Love - Clivilles & Cole 04 04 Good For Me - Amy Grant 05 05 Don't Lose The Magic - Shawn Christopher 06 08 Somebody Loves You baby - Patti LaBelle 07 09 Stars - Simply Red 08 07 I'll Get By - Eddie Money 09 11 We Got A Love Thang - CeCe Penniston 10 10 I Can't Make You Love Me - Bonnie Raitt
"STBFL" stayed at #2 for 4 weeks and 5 weeks later it was gone from the top 50. But still managed to get to #32 for 1992.

I love this song... her 2nd (and biggest) #1 on my personal chart (following "Running Back To You").

Here I thought "How You Remind Me" was the biggest pop hit of that year? ;) Back on topic - I loved this song. Really pretty and has great lyrics. I still hear it sometimes on my AC station.

One of my favorite songs ever.
Were it not for Boyz II Men's landslide victory, I'd think that screwed her out of the top.
But explain the point system. Were year-end charts determined by an inverse point system back then?

Were year-end charts determined by an inverse point system back then? Yeah, it was inverse points, like it had been since 1977. Even if Vanessa hadn't fallen so fast, she wouldn't have had the top spot for 1992, for the reasons explained above.

Utterly gorgeous.
That bit about 2/3 through where she just sings "La da da da da da da", her voice just sounds so pretty.
