UU-BRU Internet Radio [red]For Week Ending April 21, 1984[/red] (Rank This Week, Last Week, Artist, Title) [blue]01 03 Nena - 99 Luftballons[/blue] 02 02 Rick Springfield - Love Somebody 03 05 Phil Collins - Against All Odds 04 01 Paul Young - Come Back And Stay 05 04 Pointer Sisters - Automatic 06 08 Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time 07 07 Culture Club - Miss Me Blind 08 06 Thompson Twins - Hold Me Now 09 11 Rick Delbello - This Wouldn't Happen To James Bond 10 10 Yes - Leave It 99L spent a single week at #1. It took 20 consecutive weeks to reach the top, a record that still stands today. It finished the year at #2, but with only 2/3 of the points total of the years's biggest hit. www.keystonehighways.com/uubru1984.htmlI checked through my charts to see if I had charted the English version, but I hadn't. Nena had a couple more hits on my chart, including "Just A Dream". JAD peaked at #9 while "99 Luftballons" was still in the Top 10. :)

This is the song that got me listening to AT40 way back when I was in the 6th grade. I hear it occasionally on "Backtrax USA." And I remember hearing it on AT20 (Hot AC) a couple years ago.
One of my fondest memories is when AT40 mixed the German and English versions together. It was when the song was falling to #7 during one week, and then again on the year-end recap.
On another week, I remember Casey translating some of the lyrics. Obviously the English version isn't exactly the same because they have to make it rhyme.
I remember the video to "Just A Dream." They were all on their tour bus.
"99 Luftballons" A- "99 Red Balloons" A- "99 Luftballons/99 Red Balloons" Mix A+
"Has du etwas Zeit fur mich..." ("If you have some time for me...")

So do I. I think I've heard (and recorded) the German-language version of the song, as well as the English-language version.

Neunundneunzig Luftballoons!
It's a fun song. I prefer the German version, though it's been so long since I've taken German that I probably wouldn't even understand the lyrics anymore.

This song will forever remind me of John Cusack and Jeremy Piven stuffing the body of a dead hitman into the Grosse Pointe High School's boiler. Brilliant!

I've never heard the German version. Everytime I play "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" and this song comes on a radio station I stop until it's over. LOL. This is one of my favorite songs of all time.

You have something time for me Then I sing a song for you Of 99 ballons On their way to the horizon Perhaps you think degrees ' of me Then I sing a song for you Of 99 ballons And that sowas of sowas comes
99 ballons On their way to the horizon One held for uFOs from the universe Therefore a general sent A flier relay afterwards To give alarm, if it like that were There was on the horizon Only 99 ballons
99 jet military planes Everyone was a large krieger Held themselves for Captain Kirk That gave large fireworks The neighbours gerafft nothing And felt equivalent put on One shot on the horizon On 99 ballons
99 war Ministers Match and gasoline can Held themselves for smart people Witterten already greases booty Scoring: War and wanted power Man, who would have that thought That it comes once so far Because of 99 ballons
99 years war Left no place for winners War Minister does not give it any longer And also no nozzle fliers Today pull I mean rounds Seh the world in rubble lie ' nen ballon found Think ' of you and let ' it fly

I know, that's what I was saying. Half of those lyrics don't make sense unless I got the wrong German lyrics.

There was an English version of the song that got played on the radio as well. The exact lyrics should be available somewhere on the web.

The English version was titled "99 Red Balloons". Here's the lyrics:
You and I in a little toy shop Buy a bag of balloons with the money we've got. Set them free at the break of dawn 'Til one by one, they were gone. Back at base, bugs in the software Flash the message, Something's out there. Floating in the summer sky. 99 red balloons go by.
99 red balloons. floating in the summer sky. Panic bells, it's red alert. There's something here from somewhere else. The war machine springs to life. Opens up one eager eye. Focusing it on the sky. Where 99 red balloons go by.
99 Decision Street. 99 ministers meet. To worry, worry, super-scurry. Call the troops out in a hurry. This is what we've waited for. This is it boys, this is war. The president is on the line As 99 red balloons go by.
99 Knights of the air Ride super-high-tech jet fighters Everyone's a superhero. Everyone's a Captain Kirk. With orders to identify. To clarify and classify. Scramble in the summer sky. As 99 red balloons go by.
99 dreams I have had. In every one a red balloon. It's all over and I'm standing pretty. In this dust that was a city. If I could find a souvenier. Just to prove the world was here. And here is a red balloon I think of you and let it go.

There certainly aren't enough German-language songs on American radio these days. :(

There was an English version of the song that got played on the radio as well. The exact lyrics should be available somewhere on the web. The radio stations that I listened to back in 1984 started playing nothing but the English version about a month after it came out. The only time I ever remember hearing the German version was on the countdown shows (Countdown America with John Leader) and I think even that show started playing the English version after awhile as well, but seeing as that was 22 years ago, I can't be quite sure, which might come as a shock to some of you, given my photographic memory

When this song came out in 1984, it was credited in R&R as "99 Luftballons/99 Red Balloons."
