In honor of my new avatar... different songs...
This was her debut single. Her first two singles didn't do very well. When they went to re-release one they chose "It's Just The Way That You Love Me".
This is my favorite Paula Abdul song though. It's great 80's R&B. Babyface and LA Reid were a great team in the late 80's, producing this one among many other great R&B tracks. Really, this song is great because of them. The production is the highlight here.
I much prefer the single version of this track. The album version is pretty bland.
Luckily, though not a pop hit, it did well at Urban.
The Billboard Hot 100: #41 Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks: #8 Hot Dance Music/Club Play: #14

Good song, not my fave by her. I remember Power 99 in Atlanta started playing this song a lot in the summer of 1990... made me think that it was gonna be an official re-release (a la "The Way That You Love Me"), so I added it to my personal chart for a few weeks.

I loved the remix of this song. I pretty much loved the whole "Forever Your Girl" era.

Hey, rebirth, I thought that they did try to re-release it. I think I remember seeing on MTV that there was a new music video for that song as well as one for (IJ)TWTYLM.

It was okay, but my least favorite single from "Forever Your Girl".

I remember hearing it on a St. Louis station in the summer of 1990 as well and wondering if it was going to be re-released. It would've been a good choice and I'm sure it would've done well. I liked the version on her "Shut Up & Dance" remixed album better though.

Didn't the new release feature the video that highlighted all of her other videos?
I remember hearing the Paula was bulimic for awhile. :(

This was my second favorite song from Paula Abdul. I absolutely loved it! I remember playing this track over and over again as a kid. Many people who thought that Paula Abdul was black when this song was out because it was very R&B sounding and it made the Urban charts. Paula Abdul is of French Canadian, Syrian and Brazilian background. I can still recall the video being played on an episode of 'Soul Train," back then.

I love this song to death. I thought for sure this would've done better at pop radio.

Sounded for the time period too urban for pop mainstream radio, it reallly did. Rebirth, I thought that the LP version was pretty much the same as the single version or do you mean the 1990 remix from her "Shut Up & Dance" CD? I like both mixes nonetheless.

The radio mix had extra synth effects and the intro was different.

That's different from the one I remember. Plus it has clips of all her other vids, so it must have been done later. Maybe it's the version that went with Shut Up and Dance?

That's my preferred version of the song. It's the version that was used for the re-release. Confused. I didn't think they re-released this. ???

It was re-released in the UK, but it bombed.

It was re-released in the UK, but it bombed. Yeah. She was never nearly as successful in the UK. Strange considering I'd have thought they would eat up her dance pop.

I LOOOVE this song! For sure one of the stand outs on the Forever Your Girl Album. I've never been able to get why this wasn't another pop hit for her. They should have seriously re-released it. The video is so much fun!

I like it but it wasn't the best she had to offer at the time. This was great for her debut single though. An energetic track that can get you hopping on the dance floor.

Good song. I also thought it was a re-release. I don't know why it never could catch on and be a bigger hit.

It was re-released in the UK, but it bombed. Not true. When it was first released, it reached #98. It was then re-released in 1989 (after Straight Up and Forever Your Girl) and it reached #45. It was then re-re-released in 1990, as the "Pettibone Remix" with the new video (after (It's Just) The Way That You Love Me and Opposites Attract) and it was finally a hit, #21.

I also thought that the song was re-released in the summer of 1990, when she put out the album "Shut Up And Dance", but if it was, it did not chart. I thought this would have been a better choice to re-release than "The Way That You Love Me", but apparently the choice to re-issue the latter proved to be worthwhile, as it peaked at #2.
I noticed that, until the song "Vibeology", all of her songs that hit the Top 40 peaked at either #1 or #2.

I think you meant between "Opposites Attract" and "The Promise Of A New Day", as Paula's first two singles, "Knocked Out" and "(It's Just) The Way That You Love Me", missed the Top 40, peaking at No. 41. When "(It's Just) The Way That You Love" was re-released, it peaked at No. 3. "Blowing Kisses In The Wind" peaked at No. 6. I love "Vibeology"! It's definitely a fan favorite, and it was a BOLD choice for a single. Everytime there's a Paula article, "Vibeology" is often dropped in. Not bad for a song that peaked at No. 16 and that it was ahead of its time. I love the "Go Paula, Go Paula, Go Go Paula..." part, which was left off the Single Version.
