People hear this song and say "That's the Pointer Sisters?" Yep, that's them, twangy steel guitar, honky-tonk piano, baby-done-me-wrong lyrics and all. This was an oddball country hit back in the mid 70s and by far the most unusual PS song to get significant airplay. I remember hearing it on pop stations but I don't think it was a major hit at that format. I think it was played at urban, but I have no idea how well it performed there.
At any rate, if you like hearing groups do music way outside their usual style, this is not to be missed. It's worth seeking out if you haven't heard it, especially if you're a PS fan.

I love this song (I remember hearing it back in the '70s, since my mom was a country music fan). Hit #37 on Billboard's Country chart, and #13 on the Hot 100. Yet it's only appeared on a couple of the umpteen greatest hits compilations they've released (probably because it's such an atypical sound for them).
Didn't hit Billboard's R&B chart.

Love it! And love the Pointers' 70s stuff (and 80s stuff). They won a Grammy for "Fairytale" in the Country category and Elvis recorded a cover of it!

...and Elvis recorded a cover of it! Thank you! I knew I remembered hearing another version of it, but couldn't remember who it was by. My parents had his 1977 Concert LP with his live version of the song.

My parents had his 1977 Concert LP with his live version of the song. how bad is this live album? i think the 1st editon of RS Record Guide gave it a square block for a rating, meaning truly wretched, or worse than Starland Vocal Bands albums. As for "Fairytale" I think I liked this more after hearing their bad 80s hits, but my personal preference by them is "(How Long) Betcha Got A Chick On The Side."

From what I recall, it's typical overproduced, Vegas-esque '70s Elvis, with lots of horns and gospelly background singers. Which is to say I liked it as a 10-year-old, which is the last time I actually listened to it.

It had an absolutely horrible version of Are You Lonesome Tonight? on it, sung by an obviously drunk and/or drugged Elvis.
