#33 CHR/Pop, #30 hot 100, #3 UK in 1985. Finally made something of a name in the USA for the hugely acclaimed and influential (Tori Amos, Bjork, PJ Harvey, Fiona Apple etc) british singer/songwriter.
Absolute all time classic track. Totally amazing. The parent album 'Hounds Of Love' is sublime.

Yay, a fan! What's your fave song by her?
Mine is 'Get Out Of My House' from her hugely underrated album 'The Dreaming;. It's beyond amazing. It's about a woman getting raped for the second time, and all the memories of the first time flooding back. It's so scary and bizzare, but at the same time haunting and incredibly moving. She uses the house as a metaphor for her body. When she sings "I've washed the panes, I've cleaned the stains" it's so incredibly powerful. Love it to bits. In fact the whole 'The Dreaming' album is incredible.
My other faves are (With albums):
'The Big Sky' (Hounds Of Love) 'Moving' (The Kick Inside) 'James & the Cold Gun' (The Kick Inside) 'Egypt' (Never For Ever) 'The Wedding List' (Never For Ever) 'Oh, to Be In Love' (The Kick Inside) 'Breathing' (Never For Ever) 'And So Is Love' (The Red Shoes)

The lyrics are kinda weird, but the song is absolutely brilliant. The problem with us Americans is that we are not used to this kind of sound and/or music in the mainstream. As for myself I guess i like it so much because it reminds me of England (1986-1989). During that period that song was constantly on the radio it was just relaxing to me often time when my family would go somewhere in the car with the radio on. I like her others such as "Don't Give Up" and "Hounds Of Love" (which I saw her perform on The Top Of The Pops).

Didn't we have a topic for this song? I thought I posted something about this already! Man did I love this song and the whole "Hounds Of Love" album, especially the first side/half of disc. We had a DJ here on the New York classic rock station, WNEW 102.7, named Scott Muni, who had a 2 hour friday afternoon show called "Things From England." He didn't follow the chart so much as play things that very very loosely fit their rock format - loosely meaning if Kraftwerk had a big hit at time he would play it, or Duran x2 or just about anything really. But it was there that I heard "Wuthering Heights" in 78 or 79 for a few weeks and thought it was terrible.
But this song, wow, this is just a fantastic piece of music, I think she did the entire album by herself on the Fairlight Synclavier, which was one of the original music production all in one workstations (if any of u have seen cosby show with stevie wonder, I dont think keyboard he's using is synclavier, but it was that same idea.)
I also really like "WUthering Heights" now.

I remember this song moving slowly up the R&R chart, but one week on "Top 40 Satellite Survey", it debuted at 28, making me think, "Wow, this song's really beginning to take off!" However, that was not to be. I'm not sure how it did on T40SS, since I did not listen to that regularly, but I imagine it didn't go much, if any, further than its debut position.

Placebo's cover of this rules all other cover songs in the history of cover songs

I'm kind of embarrassed to say that I've never heard the original of this song. I did like the dance cover of it by the Elastic Band that WLIR used to play though.

I hadn't heard this song in ages until I heard 91X play it during their Resurrection Sunday show. I'm not familiar with a lot of Kate Bush songs, but I also liked "Rubber Band Girl".

I'm listening to this song right now! Killer! It's just awesome. I love how the song starts and ends on the same haunting note. It's one continuous haunting note, which can be heard throughout the entire song. It blends in so perfectly. It was just about at its peak 20 years ago this week. I remember listening to Rick Dees the week of Dec. 1, 1985. The song was falling from 33-35, so I knew if I wanted to record it, I'd have to hurry up and do so. I listened to AT40 that evening just for the song. Casey gave a pretty descriptive background on Kate Bush. Her music teachers could hardly believe that Kate composed her own songs for class. They were so well written and composed, that her instructors felt she was getting help from somewhere. She was such a quiet student in other areas, but she more than made up for that when it came to music. Anyhow, the song moved up from 31-30 on AT40 that week. It was its 4th and final week on the chart. I've never heard the song on the radio since. What a GREAT song!
I always had a problem understanding the lyrics in the chorus. "If only I could, I'd make a deal with God, and again to swallow places." Could never figure that one out, until I looked up the lyrics on the internet. The correct line is "If only I could, I'd make a deal with God, and I'd get Him to swap our places, been running up that road, been running up that hill, been running up that building.

I remember him telling a story about her that week, but I don't remember the content too well. That was one of the first weeks that I listened to AT40. I was totally surprised of it's demise the following week! Thank God I moved to England in early 1986, I heard it quite often!!!

I pretty much hate every cover of this song (save Chromatics cover of it), I especially hate Placebo's cover of this.
Anyways this still remains as one of my favorite Kate Bush songs. Lyrically this song always hits me like a ton of bricks, Kate Bush is just such a brilliant lyricist. Oh and I love the video for this so much, totally fits with the song so perfectly.

This is an incredible song. Kate's previous album, The Dreaming, had been the first she'd produced entirely by herself. It remains her most off the wall album, probably why it under-performed and conversely why it remains a fan favourite. Even though it got to #3 in the UK, it didn't produce any hit singles and three years later Kate seemed pretty much over. Just a couple of days before she debuted this song she was featured in NME's where are they now column.
Hounds Of Love was a huge comeback for her. The album went to #1 and "Running Up That Hill" remains her second biggest hit behind "Wuthering Heights" in the UK and her only top 40 hit in the States. It may have been a commercial decision in light of The Dreaming's performance, but splitting Hounds Of Love into two sides, one pop and one experimental, was a masterstroke. I love it the whole way through. The singles, all of which are from the pop side, are excellent, and I actually prefer both "Cloudbusting" and the title track to "Running Up That Hill". It's still a classic song though. It was hugely influential too. I doubt she would have inspired quite so many American artists generally without breaking the Hot 100, and this song specifically is probably her most covered. It's been notably sampled in Muse's "Map Of The Problematique" and Coldplay's "Speed Of Sound".
Here's a link to the video from her official YouTube account.

Love this. Can't remember if I ever heard it on radio. The song was used in the FX show Pose during the first season.
