The suit would have failed in court. The songs just aren't similar enough. If anything, "Emotions" is an homage to "Best Of My Love" and there's nothing wrong with that.
I like the song, though it would not rank among my favorites from her. I agree it definitely deserved the Female Pop Grammy. She's been robbed of that award too many times to count.

This takes me back to freshman year :'(...I absolutely loved this song when it came out. This is the type of lead off single that makes you excited about an album. I pray that her new song has the same effect.

In 1992, Rick Dees had an all-remake special and this was one of the songs he included.

I remember that Rick Dees had a listener call in saying that whenever Mariah hit the high notes in the song, the garage door would open! The song plummeted fast after it hit number 1. 38-22-14-5-2-2-1-1-1-2-5-14-34-off. I liked the song.

The song plummeted fast after it hit number 1. 38-22-14-5-2-2-1-1-1-2-5-14-34-off. Many songs did so back then. As I recall, "Praying For Time", from the year before, experienced a 20-spot fall like that. And, just weeks after "Emotions" fell fast, "Cream" by Prince & The New Power Generation fell off the chart from all the way up at #21, so that was a drop of at least 20 spots. "Can't Let Go" experienced a fast drop, as did "Make It Happen". As I recall, its chart run went like: 39-22-12-9-4-3-2-1-1-4-16-33. That was back in the good old days when songs dropped fast instead of hanging around in the Top 20 forever.

Another on fire Mariah production. She hit some SILLY notes on this track. I can just imagine her in the studio laughing at how how she could hit those notes and knowing that no one could do it. She was at the top of her game.
I agree that Mariah has been robbed by the Grammy's too many times.

it's a really good song, I was pretty steamed when I realize how much she copied "Best of my love". she really should've kicked them some money for that.

This is and always will be a great Mariah song! Mariah's voice is perfect and uplifting on this song! I loved the disco feel of the track. It was very retro, yet modern at the same time.
The bassline reminds me of "Best Of My Love" by The Emotions.

My first Mariah song. I was too young during the Vison of Love days so Emotions was my first introduction to Mariah

After the huge success of her debut album, Mariah was given slightly more freedom for her second album. Narada Michael Walden, Ric Wake, and Rhett Lawrence were sent packing. Mariah would prefer to focus on a more soulful approach, intimately working with just a few producers. Walter Afanasieff, who she worked with only on "Love Takes Time" for the previous album, would be responsible for all of the ballads on this album as well as her next few albums. Clivilles & Cole were recruited for the upbeat tracks.
The lead single almost wasn't even recorded. Mariah's first collaboration with Clivilles & Cole produced the disco track "You're So Cold". Tommy Motolla liked the track and planned for it to be the lead single from Mariah's sophomore album that would be titled The Wind. An instinct within him told him that it might be a good idea for Mariah to head back into the studio with Clivilles & Cole and see what else they could come up with. The production duo began work on a track that was to be an homage to The Emotions. When the track was presented to Tommy Motolla, all plans were changed. The appropriately titled new song, "Emotions," would become the lead single and title track from Mariah's sophomore album.
"Emotions" was released shortly after the final single from her debut album was done with it's chart run. "Emotions" was Mariah's fifth consecutive #1 single. She was now five for five with #1 singles in the second year of her career, a record which has still not been broken.
The Grammy nominated single also became her fifth consecutive single to win a BMI songwriter's award.
