The first CD (I was buying tapes before) I ever bought. I loved this album and it's one of my all time favorites. "I Am Free" is probably my fav song on the album. Daydream was also the first CD I ever bought. I was in the 7th grade. I remember my mom bought me a walkman cd player right before I got the cd and I would play it over and over until I felt asleep...on my way to school...on fieldtrips...just everywhere. I have so many great memories of it. Fantasy/OSD/ABMB were all over radio also. Good times...

Pretty good album, but I much prefer "Butterfly."
"One Sweet Day" was the song that got me interested in exploring Mariah's 90's discography, though. As "surpy" as it is, I can't help but love it.
"Fantasy" is absolute 90's Pop PERFECTION, and Mariah's vocals on "Forever" are breathtakingly gorgeous.

This is my favorite Mariah album, with only Emotions challenging it. "Fantasy" and "Always Be My Baby" are both in my top five favorite Mariah singles ever. They aren't the only good songs on the album though, as I enjoyed every single one. "Open Arms" was probably my least favorite.

Yeah, this is my favorite MC album and one of my favorite albums of all-time. I replace the droning "When I Saw You" with "Slipping Away" on my version, and it's literally a perfect album to me. I think the album title and the color scheme are great, too, because lyrically every song is some type of 'daydream' (a memory, a fantasy, etc.) and the colors go with a "hazy" vibe.
1. "Fantasy" - This is a killer album opener. It has a cool intro, and then the funky fusion of pop and hip-hop that follows is killer. To me nothing else has really sounded like it. The melody is great, too. 2. "Underneath the Stars" - This is elegant. I love that they used the Fender Rhodes to give that '70s vibe, and Mariah's use of her airy voice is perfect for conveying nostalgia. 3. "One Sweet Day" - I prefer the a capella version because the production on the album version is a bit cheesy, but regardless the vocals are killer and that's enough. It soars. 4. "Open Arms" - I know some don't like this, but I love the a capella intro and the way it feels like it's at night. I think Mariah delivers a great vocal that redeems the lyric. The production is scaled back from Journey. 5. "Always Be My Baby" - Classic. The melody is insanely great, and the acoustic guitar is a nice touch. The video perfectly captures the campfire jam feeling of the song. 6. "I Am Free" - This is obviously a gospel song. It's a good one. 7. "Slipping Away" - Mariah delivers a soulful vocal here on what is some funky production that also has a sheen to it. 8. "Long Ago" - While a lot of the album is R&B, this is the track that really pushes the album over the edge in that sense. It's dark and sort of dramatic. 9. "Melt Away" - This should have been the fourth single. It's catchy and has multi-format appeal. Mariah's vocal is great; a lot of people thought it was a duet with Babyface. LOL! 10. "Forever" - I've always considered this Mariah's version of "Hopelessly Devoted To You." I love the '50s vibe, and Mariah's vocal is sick. 11. "Daydream Interlude" - I love the hazy disco feel; it fits the vibe of the album well. Mariah could easily have been a disco diva. 12. "Looking In" - This is a track with another killer melody. The lyric is a little woe-is-me, but Mariah's vocal and the haunting production make up for that.

My second favorite album from Mariah. I live for Always Be My Baby, it's one of her best songs. Other gems are Fantasy and Long Ago-wish this one was a single. I enjoy Forever too.

I think as a whole, this is Mariah's best album overall. I would say "Butterfly" is probably her best written album. She poured her heart out into some of those songs, but in terms of the entire package -- songwriting, vocals and production -- this is her best album.

This album was such a damn beast when it was released, so many fond memories associated with it. Going back and listening to it now, I'm surprised to see how many tracks I actually don't care for anymore. I'd probably rank this third out of her 90's albums behind Butterfly and Emotions.
"Fantasy" is of course iconic. I teeter between whether I like the album version or the remix better, but both are legendary. I think pretty much all MC fans agree "Underneath The Stars" is one of her finest album tracks and needed to be a single. "Always Be My Baby" is one of her signatures, I was just at a wedding this weekend and people still go crazy for this song. There are some ace ballads of course, "I Am Free," "Forever" and "Looking In." Just gorgeous vocals and those "Looking In" lyrics... "Melt Away" has that classic 90's Babyface sound, so I'm here for it (I just wish he had done background vocals on it). "Daydream Interlude" is still so damn hot, 90's dance was simply the best.
Now for the fat. "One Sweet Day." It's a perfectly nice song, but much like "Hero," I never need to hear it again. "Open Arms" features a gorgeous vocal but it's unnecessary and just a cheesy song choice. "Long Ago" has dated pretty badly, filler. And I've always thought "When I Saw You" was a snore. This was a necessary album for her and a huge step up from Music Box and it laid the groundwork for her best album Butterfly. Not to mention, some of the hits are her most iconic.
Also, "Slipping Away" should have been on this album without a doubt. They should have dropped "Open Arms" or "When I Saw You" for it.

Mariah's 5th studio album was released on October 3rd, 1995. It spawned 3 #1 hits (including the #1 Hot 100 debuts 'Fantasy' and 'One Sweet Day' -the longest running #1 single in history- and 'Always Be My Baby') and an additional top 10 airplay hit in the US ('Forever'). It is still Mariah's best selling in the US album with a Diamond certification by the RIAA and WW sales of 25 million copies. The album is one of Mariah's best received albums by the critics and was mostly praised for the vocal performances and the more R&B-leaning sound. The album and its singles were collectively nominated for 6 awards at the 1996 Grammys. It is my personal #1 favorite Mariah album Decent album, but I find it severely overrated. I much prefer Butterfly and Music Box.

Incredible album. One of her best. I can listen through without a single skip.

The first 3 singles are all now 3x platinum. Does any other album from the 90s have three songs at that level?

I LOVE “Daydream”! It’s my second favorite Mimi album as a whole. When “Fantasy” hit the airwaves it was instant for me like with most people at the time. I had just started going to the bigger clubs at the time and hearing the club mix at the club was epic!!! The way it dropped and picked up again. People went nuts!!!! At the time “One Sweet Day” day had my 18/19 year old heart all up in my emotions. However my two favorite ballads from the project at the time were “Open Arms and When I Saw You”. I was a sucker for the basic power ballad of the 90’s. Surprisingly I wasn’t that into “Always Be My Baby”. I liked it but didn’t love it like most. However the banging club mix I had to search out and buy as an import was great! “I Am Free” hit me a couple of months after the project was released. The song hit me like a brick out of the blue. Was she trying to tear my heart out at the 1:55 point on of the song. “Forever” gets torn on but to me in 96 it sounded original so I just enjoyed it. One song that took me years to get into was “Underneath The Stars”. I know it’s a FAN favorite but those type of those smooth type ballads were not my thing. (Where was the belting..) lol. I now love it and recently got into the “(drifting away) remix. That’s the great thing about Mimi. She had/has so many great remixes you can rediscover stuff you may have overlooked back in the day. Great album!!!! Thanks Mimi! On a side note do you know how long it took me to finally get a hold of the “Slipping Away” track…. I didn’t purchase the “Always Be My Baby” single back in the day and my friend wouldn’t give her copy up so I got stuck with a bootleg recorded version I recorded off her. It was also played on the radio here in Boston so I’m sure I spent endless hrs trying to record it off the radio to. Lol

It makes sense that Mariah would do a song cycle about fantasies/dreams considering the unhealthy marriage she was in at the time. I don't even think it was intentional on her part, but it tracks that she would retreat psychologically.

This album is still timeless. She really outdid herself on this album. She definitely hit the nail with the music and styles. I will always play this album.
