They only hit until you cry After that you don't ask why You just don't argue anymore
Fantastic song from this highly influential lady. Easily her biggest hit besides Toms Diner. I love it.

I didn't like it at first, but I learned to appreciate it after "Tom's Diner" came out.

I liked this song. It dealt with child abuse, which I was fascinated with back then. I even did a term paper on it the following spring (child abuse, not the song, although I did cite the song, as well as "Dear Mister Jesus" by Powersource).

A great song, and a powerful one considering the subject about child abuse.

Good song, I'm see gonna of Napster has this. This is one those songs you can't help but listen to. I did not like at first until I actually listened to it. I also like "Tom's Diner", I think I will play that as well.

I really like it. I always like to interpret the lyrics as dealing with going insane or something like that though, so to each his own.

I always thought that Suzanne Vega was a bit of an odd ball.

I like it. "Gypsy" is my favorite by her though.

This is really good. It's impressive that a song about such a tragic subject became so huge. Janie's Got A Gun from Aerosmith is another that I can think of, even though that's not about such a young child.

Jeremy is closer to Janie... because of the gun factor, but from the parents side I always considered it to be more about neglect and lack of attention than anything. The difference between that and this song imo is that there's actual references to the parents physically abusing their child in Luka ("they only hit until you cry, after that you don't ask why").

Love this song. Listened to that album recently. Very ahead of its time I feel. Interested in listening to more of her stuff

Doesn't sound dated or anything. Still sounds timeless. I like it.

I remember Suzanne Vega singing it and playing her acoustic guitar on SNL back in the 80s. So talented.

This is okay but I do prefer "Tom's Diner" (mainly the 1990 DNA version)
