I just got this idea, even though I'm thinking of songs within the past five years, you can post any song.
I will start out with saying that it's a bit shocking that Virgin or whatever decided that "Try, Try, Try" by The Smashing Pumpkins was a better choice for a MACHINA single than "Wound". That one seems so much catchier to me, for whatever reason. The other one is catchy and has a good video, but this was so much better. And the poor promotion of the album got the band to release MACHINA II for free, which I thought was cool. But either way, it seems like a single to me.
Tomorrow or so I will probably think of more.

Never Say Goodbye by Bon Jovi , this was pretty unusual in 1987 as it got some airplay and surely would've been a smash if it had been released as a single.

It was odd that Mariah didn't have a 5th single from her debut CD. The first 4 went to #1.

It was odd that Mariah didn't have a 5th single from her debut CD. The first 4 went to #1. I guess they were in a rush to get her sophomore album out... "Emotions" debuted on the Hot 100 just two weeks after "I Don't Wanna Cry" fell off.

"Take My Hand" should have been released from Dido's "No Angel" CD.

I'm still kind of confused about this song, actually. It was the American B-side for the single "Angel," but wasn't the charting side on the Hot 100. However, it was the charting side on Billboard's Hot Black Singles charts where it hit #9 and became Madonna's biggest urban hit ever. I just wonder what the rules were back then that made this happen.

Into The Groove only appeared on the B-side to the 12" vinyl single for "Angel". Billboard didn't allow it to chart on the Hot 100 because it was on the 12".

This was back in the '80s, when dance/crossover songs by white artists were viable at urban radio. And actually, it was "Like A Virgin" that hit #9 on Billboard's Black Singles chart. "Into The Groove" peaked at #19, her third highest charting hit on R&B ("Vogue" went to #16).

Thanks for the correction... It's actually harder for me to believe that "Like A Virgin" was her biggest urban hit (and hit #8 urban airplay), because that song is about as pop as you can get.

You'd be surprised; Elton had a major R&B hit with Bennie And The Jets as did the Rolling Stones with Hot Stuff and Miss You. I know from past listening experience that here in NY, both WBLS and KISS-FM were influential in exposing listeners to early new wave and electro. Madonna had gotten airplay on these stations with Everybody, and by the time of ...Virgin, she was an easy fit and mix with stuff from ABC, Kraftwerk, Freeeze, Culture Club, Tears For Fears, Level 42 and the like. WBLS played a rock leaning tune like Don Henley's All She Wants To Do Is Dance and Bruce Hornsby's The Way It Is as well for a while.

I mentioned this before in another topic. Jermaine Jackson "Tell Me I'm Not Dreamin" in 1984. Others:
Stevie Wonder "Isn't She Lovely"
Lenny Williams " 'Cause I Love You"
Curtis Mayfield "Move On Up"
Midnight Star "Curious" (12 " Promo for radio stations & clubs)
Con Funk Shun "Love Train" (not a remake but a hot slow jam!!)

"Don't Speak" by No Doubt should have had a huge Billboard Hot 100 chart run, but was disqualified at the time because no CD single was released for it. >:(
I believe Billboard changed its Hot 100 rules regarding mandatory CD singles release as a requirement for making the Hot 100 shortly after this.

How about "Stairway To Heaven" by Led Zeppelin that wasn't released as a single believe it or not. This was my first choice. I'll also go with Garbage - Sex Is Not The Enemy, 3 Doors Down - It's Not Me, AFI - Summer Shudder and 10 Years - Seasons to Cycles.

A lot of these don't count since they were released as radio singles. I think the OP meant songs that weren't sent to radio or given a single.
