Sam Cooke's secular music career was suprisingly short. His first hit was in 1957 and he died in 1964. But in between those years, he released a string of really solid records. "Wonderful World," although it is admittedly a little cheesy, is one of my favorites from him. It's a really earnest sounding record with a straightforward theme and a simple arrangement. Though it hit #2 in the UK, it missed the top 10 in the U.S. However, I'd say that this song has reached classic status on both sides of the Atlantic. Despite his clean cut image and his gospel roots, he died under very shady circumstances: He was shot by an L.A. hotel manager after he broke violently into her office in search of a woman who fled his hotel room after he allegedly attempted to rape her... The truth of this account is still debated today.

Don't know much about history...
Classic! There was a slowed-down remake in the '70s by Art Garfunkel, Paul Simon, and James Taylor that's also great... it's amazing how the same song can sound so good in two completely different arrangements.

At first I thought he sang "Don't know much about the French-eyed cooks".

One of his best. #2 Hot R&B Sides in 1960. It peaked at #2 in the UK 26 years after its original release, in 1986.

Released in 1960, this was a single from Sam Cooke's "The Wonderful World of Sam Cooke" album. It peaked at #12 on the Hot 100 and #2 on the R&B Singles chart. I love the song. It's simple and straight to the point with an infectious melody.
